I've recently started Porting and Polishing my intake manifold. I placed my order with Eastwood, then within an hour I receive an email stating, I would have an additional $90 on the shipping, because of a hazardous material and I live in Alaska. I was just wondering what other options I have?

Or just to chemical companies?

Maybe you can have someone else buy it and ship it to you for cheaper?

I'm not sure if there is a sufficient substitute. Seems like a pretty unique product...

materials. When we ship hazardous materals at work, we are held resposible until it changes custody. I think it is different for individuals. Now that you mention it, I don't think I've been asked whats inside when I ship items. Hmmmm...

...at an electric motor repair shop perhaps?

Could you ship your manifold to someone who's done this before & still has some left, for less money?

Or resign yourself to the fact that it never really gets that hot in Alaska? (just kidding!)

Not sure on the rates of other shipping services, I've never tried to ship hazmat before.

service. I used it a lot to ship sampling gear to Alaska when I lived in Seattle. Some of that included hazmat on occasion.

The whole issue here is that hazmat typically can't be shipped by passenger airplane. It has to go via truck or cargo plane in most cases. There are some exceptions for small quantities in small planes. I had to deal with the headache of all the necessary paperwork to take methanol and acid on small passenger fligts around Alaska. Ultimately it was the pilot's call on the small planes.
