View Full Version : Do you guys use a spark plug wire boot puller, or do you just yank.

I am ordering plugs, wires, and air filter and was wondering if I should get a tool to make the job a little easier.

If you use one, tell me how you like it and what it is.

Thanks for putting up with all of my spark plug talk, I am yet to change them in my car. Thanks.

http://www.autohausaz.com/catalog/lookup_parts.cfm?VehicleID=1008739&CFID=245185&CFT oken=361017

I use a large, long plastic zip-tie (out of which I have cut the plastic locking stem in the head) and just wrap the zip-tie around the metal base of the plug wire, snug it up, and then pull. Due to the fuel rail and FPR over number three, I usually have a lot less zip-tie to hold on to and use a pair a pliers to get a better grip.

Works like a charm over and over and over again! Much better than plug wire pullers. For once, I taught my mechanic buddies a trick.

The reason I ask is, because from searching it appears that Karlyn = STI = Bremi, or something like that. If I am wrong, let me know.

Check out these guys for wires. I have just the standard 7mm and I'm happy with them. Great prices to boot.

http://www.magnecor.com</a

Which is pretty good for a $100 set, I think. STI is the US distributor for BREMI ("STI, by BREMI"). I don't know Karlyn. Bosch premium quality wire sets should be good, but expensive.

if my plug wires are going south or is it just good sense to change them when my Rapidfire 9s go in? I'd prefer to save some $ and not put them in at this point but if you think otherwise oh great one...

... with the engine running and the hood open, use an atomizer to spray water mist over the engine. If you see any arcing, the spark plug wires aren't insulating properly anymore.

However, next time you change your plugs you may want to reuse the wires. In this case use some sort of puller. These are the ones I bought and I found them pretty cheap online. They work extremely well and don't damage the wires.

inexpensive and available everywhere. However if you're married to the 12V like I am, have some time, deeper pockets and want the best spark plug boot removal tool ever made for the 12V bar none then the Beta Tools #1474B is just the tool for you. Figure around $60 but I got mine for $43 so there are deals out there. Absolutely the most positive-grip boot removal tool you can buy. Makes child's play out of removing even the most stubborn, frozen/seized spark plug boots. And its thin-wall design slips over all boots in their narrow bore confinement with room to spare.

But the grippy rubber condoms fell off -- until I glued them on. :-P
