Hi all im am hoping to get a few pointers on a job i need to do. I have 2 12vs' 93 / 90 cs and a 1997 a4Q, i think both are in need of a combination of some engine, snub or tranny mounts as both are exhibiting a side to side shimmy while accellerating or decelerating on the highway. (The 90 is particularily bad and feels like its gonna hop a lane at certain times while the 97 has only a slight shimmy on the hwy but is starting to emit a bit of a thump when putting it in 1st gear)

So i have 6 jack stands 2 low profile jacks 2 audi spare jacks and was wondering if this is adequate to do the job. I have never done it so i am trying to get as much information as possible. Does any one know how to diagnose which ones are bad, replacing them all im sure is the best solution but too costly for me at this time.

Thanks
James

99% of the time its the 2 side gearbox mounts, and the front snub.

However the description you give sounds more like worn suspension bits-(side to side shimmy while accellerating or decelerating on the highway. The 90 is particularily bad and feels like its gonna hop a lane at certain times while the 97 has only a slight shimmy on the hwy)

Then you add: "but is starting to emit a bit of a thump when putting it in 1st gear"- which is usually a worn front snub.

good advice about the highway jitters miktip, im not sure you'll even see this (post is a bit older now) but it turns out it was the right side drive shaft causing the shimmy, which kind of explained why the issue seemed to come and go from day to day.
