i have a 97 2.8 Quattro(12v) and am planning on converting it to a 2.7 Quattro Turbo(S4).

for all you master audi mechanics out there and the rest of the audi owners i would like to know your thoughts on this conversion process.

is it worth it? in my opinion it is, it may be some what expensive and time consuming but in the end i think it will be worth all the effort.

reason for doing this is i am not happy with my 12v and have driven the turbo 30v and am overwhelmed by the way it performs.

i know you are all going to say it will never be an S4 but as far as the handling portion goes i will come as close as i can to S4 handling as possible.

i dont plan on making this happen overnight and it will take time, but i would like to have something different and unique. i will not be changing any bumpers or side skirts i will keep the exterior as is on the pics posted below.

would i would really like to know is what i am going to need in its entirety to accomplish this conversion.(this is where i would appreciate the audi master mechanic's help) and for the rest of the audi owners who may have attempted this before i would like to know your experiences, problems, and helpfull techniques you may have found to make the transition easy.

thanks i will be posting this in the S4 forums as well to get as much information on both platforms as possible.

here are pics of what she looks like on the outside.

first, good luck trying to keep the stock bumper and fit those dual intercoolers behind the bumper. Sorry to say, but it ain't gonna happen... nor will you get the proper flow to those intercoolers if you don't use the S4 bumper. It was designed that way for a reason.

Now for the issues. You are converting a nDBW car into a DBW car. Evvvverrrything is going to need to be replaced. ECU, pedals, controls, ecu, speedo display (maybe), sensors, yadda yadda yadda. I can't even think of all teh stuff that would need to be replaced. Next you'd need an engine (duh), tranny, replace ALLLLL the front subframe, a-arms, hubs, brakes, possibly rear diff, and the list goes on and on and on and on.

So, like you said, it's not an easy thing. Best bet would be to either modify and have fun with your car, look into installing a custom sc or turbo, or sell it and find a nice S4 ;)

Just my 2 cents... take it as you will.

Also, you can post multiple pix in one post... type: img src="address to your pic" and put these symbols at the beginning and end, respectively: "<" ">"

either way, you're looking in the realm of more than your car is worth to do this. My advice: save a little, sell the 12V, and just buy an S4. It'll be much less aggravation.
Also, as far as handling goes, I did my suspension for $800 installed (I bought slightly used parts) and after test driving an S4, i must say that yes, power is corrupting. However, I am confident in the fact that I could outhandle a stock S4 any day of the week.

there are people out there who have swapped a 2.7t into their car. They don't really post on here. As Jretal said, going from nDBW to DBW alone is a significant hurdle. Your best bet is to find a totalled S4 and move everything over. Just getting the engine is not nearly enough. But, if you're not very knowledgeable and capable with this, it's not worth it. Sell your car and buy an S4. It's really one of those questions - "if you have to ask..."

This makes things a lot easier in terms of that. Still though, it's not easy and definitely not cost-effective.

if you're not doing it yourself, you better have a very large stack of cash lying around.
if you are doing it yourself, and asking what it is that you need to do this kind of project, it leads me to believe that you're not very mechanically inclined....i mean no offense by that...
if you want a 2.7t, sell your 12v, fork over the cash you would have invested in swapping the 2.7t, and buy an s4. you'll save yourself a lot of time and $...just my opinion.

im a mechanic so as far as work i dont have a problem doing any of it, obviously this is no honda civic, but why pay 20,000 dollars for a car when i could get everything for cheaper and make it myself i already have the shell all it needs is a engine, tranny and related parts, how is that all going to come up past the buying price of a entire car. like i said before i have no problem doing the work myself, its just finding parts.
