my 96 a6Q is making a ticking sound when the gas pedal is pressed
Its not the low oil sound and its not the low octane sound

it sounds like two sticks being tapped together
and it seems louder from the pass side..
what could it be..?

I wouldn't rule out the exhaust system. Mufflers that have a fairly wide body (aka, lots of sheet metal wrapping) can start singing with the vibrations of the engine; also changes with RPM (comes and goes, sometimes pitch too).

A friend's GTi was doing that and I told him to come on over. I fixed it with my favorite German "fixing" style: Gootentite method (Good-and-tight for you slow people out there). My fix was to hit that stupid muffler with a rubber mallet. Didn't noticeably dent it, but the sheet metal was tighter, so it quit rattling, for good.

is it only while driving (actually moving) or just free-revving the engine?

..it should slowly go away as the debris might still be stuck in there somewhere.
