A 078-133-471 MAF arrived yesterday. Has about a 3" bore! But it came with a 3 wire sensor on it. Good news is that the form factor of my 4 wire sensor (054-133-471A) is exactly the same. Screws right on and the sensor element is in the center of the sampling tube. Housing has same bolt holes as the 078's too. Looks very promising, once I make the MAF mod Mance suggested and get his hose and elbow kit.

RKing, I will have to remove or mod the bracket around the MAF and reroute the little hoses as you suggested, cause there won't be room for them any more.

The 078, stock, has a funky air exhaust from the sampling tube which will vanish with the mod. Should permit more air over the sensor element.

Air path into the sensor element is begging for a tapered inlet (Velocity Stack), which will be consistant with the way my 054 was modified. plan is to leave enough room to cut a groove for Mance's O- rings if the mod produces CEL. May just wait for Nothing to try his before I do anything on mine. Need silicon hoses anyway. Will attempt to order today.

Any one know if Mance sees Pay Pal payment notices now?

Mance has been able to check his email most every day, I've been in contact with him about my throttle body this week, but I haven't heard anything about the VS I ordered last week (ordered through his website, I should have just emailed him directly like I did about the TB.)

I'm anxious to see what SOTP (seat of the pants) gains you get by going with the larger MAF. The way your car pulls, I'd expect that your engine could really use the larger MAF.

He hasn't been around to answer questons lately, and I don't think he modified the housing at all (but not sure, basing that on old posts with scanty details.)

Did you give up on the Stage 3 MAF yet?

From what I have in my hand. I got a 471 MAF (no A) from a 96 A6... and the screw pattern from it's 3 wire and the length of it's sensor are the same as my 4 wire sensor. I'll post pictures when I get home.

If I've wasted bandwith in trying to clarify this topic, I am truly sorry.

and I've given up on attaching a 4pin sensor to a 471A MAF. too much dicking around with the screw area when you can just get a 471, chop the posts (and maybe the sample tube) and get basically the same ID diameter.

I think I figured this all out by-myself... and never actually posted that this is what I believed to be true

check yah later
