View Full Version : Make the oil stop!

Hi I am new to the forum and just picked up my first Audi A4 Quattro yesterday. It's a 96 2.8.

It has a menacing oil leak , the origin of which, I just figured out today.(I tried search but 2400 is a lot of articles to sift through) I looked through about 6 Audi websites for common problems before purchasing this car and a site had a picture of the engine with common oil leak prone spots circled. I thought it was this site but I can't find it.

Anyways, the question... It looks like the sender above the oil filter boss on the front of the engine, drivers side, is leaking. I usd to work on a 67 Camaro race car but these Audi's seem so different in that this thing looks like its impossible to get to without removing the motor.

1) Does anyone know which sensor this is? I am assuming it is the pressure or the temp sensor for the oil.

2)What is the easiest way to replace this sensor and do I have to drain the oil pan to do it?

3)I have a Bently manual but hell...AFC, AHA, AHH ABA Basketball, it doesn't tell me how to figure out which motor I have and I can't find any liturature on the sender in this 1000 pg monster of a book.

And Last...

4) This car is HELLA COOL!!! But it runs like an absolute PIG on the low end (under 3k RPM) I have read the last few pages of this forum. It seems like the only suggestions are an S4 throttle body and some airflow and MAF modifications. Perhaps I am wrong but on my race-car (8 sec 1/4 67 Small block Camaro) a high volume of CFM was great but rarely did anything for low end torque as it was velocity and tight but agressive fuel curves that helped the under 3K RPM performance. Is there anything out there for these cars in that arena? It seems that except for the veloc. stacks, most of the stuff mentioned here is about air volume increase.

you have an AFC engine... that should help quite a bit.

As for the leak, I have no idea what you're talking about =P I'm not too familiar with the sensor locations on the engine... so if this sounds right to others... please chime in and teach me too =P

Is it leaking between the oil pan and the oil cooler? (oil cooler is what the oil filter connects to) If so, I posted something yesterday for Mr D. about replacing this o-ring. It's a rubber o-ring costing $2 that just gets a lil hard with age... and goes. NOt a difficult fix... esp if you were working on/building drag cars.

If that's not what is leaking, I'm not too sure where else you're looking... pix are always helpful.

Hope this helps

Anyhow, here is a picture I labeled some items for reference:

A) The front driver side corner of the oil pan.
B) The oil filter.
C) Oil Cooler thingy...
D) A sensor looking thing without a hose or wire connected to it.

"D" appears to be the culprit. There doesn't appear to be anything connected to it but its dripping from what appears to be the base. I can not see the source exactly but it is definitely coming from this immediate area.

Help?

In addition, I pulled off the lower skid plate and saw this:

For reference:

1) To grille
2) To something...
3) Altenator

That is supposed to be connected I am sure but what is it? I followed the air box and the intake goes through the upper part of the grille.

Maybe I am retarded but this Bently million page manual is much harder to navigate than a Chiltons.

I'm not really sure what that is, sorry man. Is there any kinda blow up of the engine in the bentley that might point you in the right direction? Best I could say is that it's a sensor, but I really can't tell ya.

Mr D. is right about your wtf pic though... you're missing a piece.

and you are correct... the bentley manual is impossible to use... even if you know what you're looking for... but you do whatcha gotta do ya know?

Sorry I couldn't help ya out more... this is a new one for me

That should help you figure out how to get to it, whatever "it" may be :).

I have changed out my 0.3 bar sender (right behind the 1.8 bar sensor) and only needed to remove the oil filter. Might have to remove oil cooler to change 1.8 bar senser? Definitely a tight place to work under there.

Also it should have a white connector with a rubber boot coming off of it.
