Granted this is pretty much Mance's work. Was hoping for a quick recap...
Last I heard there was a last ditch attempt/hack to get timing advance out of it.
I'm also interested in whether this unit can be made to move back the rev limiter and, more importantly, remove the 130mph speed limit.
Thanks!

but someone (eep?) made a few suggestions on how to advance timing electronically but I don't think that was using the SMT6.

Yeah, it was eep's comment I was referring to.
I really wish we could at least remove the speed limiter.

limiter uses. If you snip this wire, no more limiter. However, it causes a CEL. And, this was a long time ago and I have no idea if it is true.
WTF do you need to go faster than 130 for? ;-)

I do have some thoughts on advancing timing but I was going to wait and see what Mance can do with the SMT6 first.

Like I said, I don't know if this is true so persue at your own risk! ;-)

The speedometer uses the signal from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (sometimes G22, sometimes G98), which is on the left side of the transmission housing next to the drive flange.
It comes in to the cabin via pin 8 of the black 10-point connector in the auxiliary relay cluster (a brown wire) and from there becomes a brown/red wire that hooks to pin 20 of the blue 26-point connector on the back of the instrument panel.
Disconnecting the wire between the instrument cluster and the ECU (pin B9 on the ECU, usually white/blue) will indeed defeat the speed limiter. But it will also defeat cruise control, idle stabilization, and a few other things of varying importance (and of course cause the ever-dreaded check engine light to illuminate - but I suppose you could bypass that while you're at it).
The biggest issue in terms of Bad Things happening when it's disconnected, aside from the convenience things like cruise control, is that if the ECU just thinks that the vehicle is stationary (which it will assume for 10 minutes after the car is started) it will continue to attempt idle stabilization, which isn't something that you want the ECU to be doing when you're trying to drive (or more accurately, when you're trying to brake).
But there ya go. Honestly my 90 hasn't come anywhere near the speed limiter in over 60,000 miles; I don't even know if it could pull it off. Maybe if I had more of these toys that everyone talks about here :)

I did that the same day I bought my A4 2.8, I hauled arse up the grapevine back to fresno. That was fun.
BTW - i just checked today, i have both good driver discount and good student discount, go figure

not on US highways with their narrow lanes and crappy road surface. There may be deserted stretches of highway in desolate areas where one can do 130, but not here in the Bay Area. Once, I did go 130 in Montana when the car was new in '96. I did that once, just because I thought the car should at least once see top speed. I've also gone out on a dry lake bed and gone top speed. Other than that, my itch for speed has been sufficiently scratched in the past. ;-)

Besides, driving slowly only allows other people more time to run into you.
