View Full Version : ok either the car doesn't like this TB or I've got a vac leak...

Swapped the monster TB out for the regular XTB and the car immediately started to idle rich. Yeah, I know... should be lean if anything but F/A monitor says rich. Will dither/try to maintain 'stoich' while in closed loop and goes safely to about 13.5:1 in open-loop which is about right where I want it. But way way rich at idle... dead rich... maximum on the gauge. And it idles at just at/slightly under 1k rpms. Definately reeks of a vac leak but for the life of me I can't figure from where. I've been over the install dozens of times, line-by-line and can't find it. No codes of any kind on the VAG tool and runs fine except for the high idle. umplugged-replugged the ISV harness several times to no avail. Capped off the vac port in base of throttle body so thats not it. Replaced purge valve line so thats out. Recovery sleeve EGR port is sealed with a threaded plug. All lines/solenoids on top of plenum plate are new, connected and looking good. Brake boost line is good, same with cruise control. Vac reservoir is new & good, holds vacuum even after a week of not running.

Only thing I can think of is there is something about that missing center wall and manifold vacuum that is gonna pitch a bitch about the throttle body. Yet that makes zero sense to me as the primary is open to that vacuum source when the wall is intact.

I'm stumped but I'll sleep on it. See if anything comes to me overnight.

Do you still have the original line? It could leak anywhere between the valve and the firewall with giving you a clue.

with a threaded NPT plug. The vac cap was installed just before I put the TB on. And it's still there and working.

maybe odd enough as it sounds, it does have something to do with the center wall... I can't for the life of me explain why, as I understand the logic by which you justified that it Shouldn't be cause by the wall...

hmmmm, helluva pickle you've created. Maybe swap in other TB's just to get objective trials on causation. Kinda tedious, I know, so you should hit the hay & think about it tomorrow
