every now and again. How hard were you driving the car? I had that happen once when I went to fill the car with gas... it was about one bar past middle. Then it went down as soon as I turned the car on and got the fans running again. It happens from time to time I guess... haven't had a problem since... and this was about a year + ago.
Also, my dad's TT does this as well... even when running! But that was also at an AutoX... and it was quite warm out, so that might explain that one. As long as the idiot light doesn't come on, you're within safe operating temps.

when you got back in the car and restarted the car the coolant temp was over the middle mark?
I've had this happen before and I think it is normal. I believe its because when you shut the car off the fans don't run to cool the engine down and the coolant is no longer circulating through the radiator. If it is staying in the middle during driving and you're not getting any CEL's, I wouldn't worry about it.
Good luck...

At the time I read his post I was way too tired to make sense out of it. Mea culpa!
After prolonged high-speed driving, or at high ambient temps, it's suggested that one lets the engine idle for a minute or two before shutting down. That way your baby won't suffer heatstroke. ;-)

Ok here is a little more...
What was strange last night,
I hooked up the VAG and was monitoring the coolant temp(Engine 001) the temp was btw 95-96C I shut down the car and put it back to accs. no problem needle in middle, VAG reading same I did this couple times w/o starting the car and almost any other the needle was going over the middle but VAG reading was same. when I started the car in next mins the needle droped but the VAG reading of the temp was same.
What do u think?

I believe you can't trust the coolant gauge. There is also the issue of the coolant gauge needle being stabilized in the 12 o'clock postion, so that we don't worry when the coolant gets a little hot. I'll take a look how this is on my car later today.

The needle of the coolant gauge was exactly at 12 o'clock after 20 minutes of driving, no matter whether the engine was running or only in accessory mode. I don't have the full VAG-COM, so I can't check any data.
