View Full Version : Xpost... Billowing blue smoke, not billowing anymore, but still... snowman '92 100 01-02-2004, 10:06 PM Thanks... Clicky clicky nbevins 01-03-2004, 02:52 PM Jretal 01-03-2004, 04:00 PM I've seen cars at the autox's make the sharp corners and start billowing blue smoke (burning oil) when they hit the gas. The cause was them having too much oil in the pan and when the oil pushed up to the other side, it got sucked into the pistons and burned up. I saw it happen on a sentra and a vette... That's one possiblity. snowman '92 100 01-04-2004, 12:10 AM and I've heard that it is especially difficult sometimes on these cars to get those little buggers out (air pockets). So I have much to try and test. It's either that or blockage somewhere. The radiator is cold! My car heats up incredibly fast. snowman '92 100 01-04-2004, 12:14 AM my oil indicator comes up at random times, usually (three times now) after driving (no hard corners or anything, my car drives like a boat) for several (10?) minutes. I am used to needing to put oil in every 1000 miles or so, usually about 1 quart. It has been a while since I've put anything in it. So when the oil light yelled at me, I put in two quarts, checked the level, and went on. Next day, POOF! Lots of smoke. However, today when I drove around, no smoke whatsoever. Foaming the oil is bad, I've heard. It'll find it's way into the cylinders, I guess. Am I free and clear? Did I ruin anything? Still have to figure out why oil light is coming on, now. KMHPaladin 01-04-2004, 01:14 AM snowman '92 100 01-04-2004, 01:41 AM this is the indicator that lights up where the FM radio station display is, as well as the "OK" screen upon startup in my 92 100. Jretal 01-04-2004, 07:38 AM Then I don't think you really did any damage. Don't hold me to that, but I think you'll be alright. Just don't make a habit of overfilling your oil =P Do you have some sorta oil leak? Or does it just burn that much oil. Just curious. moribundman 01-04-2004, 11:14 AM "It has been a while since I've put anything in it. So when the oil light yelled at me, I put in two quarts, checked the level, and went on. Next day, POOF! Lots of smoke." The amount of oil between the minimum and the maximum marks on the dipstick is roughly one quart. How low was it that you had to add TWO quarts? I'm not surprised your oil light used to come on when going through corners. There just wasn't enough oil in the crankcase and pan. In corners you lost oil pressure when the oil pick-up tube couldn't find any oil. Means oil pressure was too low to maintain sufficient hydrodynamic oil film in your crankshaft and rod bearings (cams and the rest, too). That's what the oil pressure sensor tried telling you. When the oil pressure light comes on it's bad enough, but when the buzzer comes on you are already risking seizing your engine. I hope you had a real good full synthetic oil with a lot of ZDDP in there. Too much oil can cause foaming and frothing of oil in the crankcase. You may also get oil in the cats (---> blue smoke), and that wouldn't be ideal either. If you know your car needs a fair amount of oil, you should really check it each time you gas up. And keep it topped off. Don't just add two quarts when the oil light scares you... :-P snowman '92 100 01-04-2004, 11:38 AM it was the little radio frequency display in the dash that told me. Maybe that's the same thing. I usually have to add a quart every 1000 miles or so, but it has been more like 1800+ miles since I've added anything. Good news (sorta) is that my cats were already bad, as in hollow. Well, one of them was anyway. My oil light has never come on before this episode. Including any high speed or sharp corners. In fact, I can't even TAKE highspeed corners because my struts and springs are like butta! It drives like a boat right now. snowman '92 100 01-04-2004, 11:40 AM necessarily bad. I prolly helped ruin more of my cats, but they were already toast. Also, there's no more smoking anymore. moribundman 01-04-2004, 11:53 AM I think 1 quart every 1k miles is a lot of oil. My car has 130k miles on it and needs only about 1/2 quart every 5k miles. But when I had that leaky valley pan gasket, I'd leak a quart every week. And that happened only while driving; there were never more than two or three drops of oil under the car. snowman '92 100 01-04-2004, 11:59 AM A quart 1000 miles; I don't know, maybe it's not quite that often... But it's a 92... 147k snowman '92 100 03-01-2004, 10:23 PM out my exhaust (blue smoke) around corners and hard accelerating. It leveled itself off eventually. I have since switched to Mobil 1 5w40 "truck and SUV" synthetic and it is a DREAM! It rocks! No more lifter noise. try it... |
