I understand that horsepower "at the wheels" is obviously always lower than the standard HP ratings. My question is, would the HP at the wheels be LOWER for a stock A4 1.8T QUATTRO than it would be for a stock A4 1.8T FWD?

Due to the additional frictional loss through the Quattro drivetrane, figure about a 5% lower hp figure (at the wheels) for the Quattro.
Mike
It will be a little lower due to friction, but gearing also affects how much HP is also put down on the road and Quattros usually have a slightly shorter 1st and 2nd gear, so actual rolling road HP might just be equivalent. Also due to the superior traction you can put down that power as well. How much HP is lost i dont know, but Audi's and Subaru's with their longitudinally mounted motors & transmissions have less friction than transverse mounted.

It affects acceleration, but not HP.
Mike

Due to the lower final drive (and lower 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear ratios in the 1.8t) in the quattro boxes, for a given road speed the engine speed will be higher in any gear. Therefore the hp genrated by the engine, apart from when past peak power, will be higher as the engine will be revving higher.
Make sense?
Graham

Graham,
I understand the logic behind the argument. However, the gearing will affect acceleration (not power) by putting the engine at different points in the powerband. The actual HP generated by the motor is not ever changing. Of that I am almost certain.
That is why you can do a dyno run in any gear...and STILL get the same power curves. This proves that gearing does not affect HP at all.
Mike
