View Full Version : I guess you guys can tell what I'm up to... moribundman 05-24-2003, 05:50 PM What's the best way to get the oil in? ;-) elric 05-24-2003, 07:07 PM I used one of these funnels from Harbor freight: With another foot of 1/2" heater hose on the end. It was just long enough to feed down through the top of the engine down into the tranny hole, and the O.D. of the heater hose was a good fit for the size of the transmission fill hole. moribundman 05-24-2003, 07:59 PM But what about the rear differential? A squeeze bottle and a hose? elric 05-25-2003, 12:03 AM Used about 24" of hose and same funnel, and tie wrapped the funnel to a ladder sitting right next to the rear passenger tire. Then snaked the hose over the tire and into the rear diff. Had to make sure there were no low spots in the hose to collect fluid, but it wasn't too hard to route. moribundman 05-25-2003, 12:25 AM I think I'll substitute the ladder with my girlfriend. :D PS: How'd you get rid of the squeaky clutch? VAP 05-25-2003, 05:16 AM you can get them at all the big auto parts houses. It pulls oil/liquid out of one container on the up-stroke of the pump handle and pumps it into any other container on the down-stroke of the pump handle. Mine was under $10 from Checker Auto Parts. It has inlet/outlet hoses and you put the outlet in the tranny or final drive and the inlet into the container with the new oil. Pump it 20-25 times per quart until oil starts to over flow out the tranny or final drive ports that the fill hose is pushed into. Keet it around, sealed up in a large ZipLok bag and it's there for next time or several other uses that always happen along when you have one. Look for them at/near the hypoid gear oils in all the major auto parts chains (usually a red polypropylene plastic pump body with black pump knob & hoses). Tho I have seen white bodied ones that have threaded lids to screw on to quart or gallon containers. Whole bunch easier, faster, cleaner than the funnel/long hose method... ICK! Black Sunshine 05-25-2003, 08:54 AM moribundman 05-25-2003, 08:55 AM I bet Miss moribundman prefers if I get the pump. ;-) moribundman 05-25-2003, 08:57 AM Mr.D, if you're here, what happened? elric 05-25-2003, 02:17 PM That got rid of the squeak. moribundman 05-25-2003, 02:23 PM Audiboy 05-25-2003, 10:54 PM

clicky

moribundman 05-25-2003, 11:40 PM That's how much they want for the transfer pump. By the way, I found your write-up in my "archives"... :-) VAP 05-26-2003, 04:59 AM Thats EXACTLY the same transfer pump I've used for the last 4-5 years. Only difference is mine has black hose instead of red but same color/model pump body. I think I paid $8-$9 for it at Checker Auto Parts when I bought it. Also on the MTL. I only use 70W80 rather than the thicker/heavier 75W90 in the tansmission. So much smoother especially in winter. And ditto on the final drive. This is one of the first things I do on every used Audi I've bought since the early eighties, tho Redline's product line has grown exponentially since then. And with my last TT (tho I had a deposit on it for 5 years before it arrived) I'll likely never buy another new car off the showroom. Good choices you've made... likely the best! Audiboy 05-28-2003, 08:58 AM prices. He knows after our wedding, I will be starting on a B6 A4 2.7T conversion, so he will keep an eye on a 2002 for me. Yeah, I been using redline ever since I busted my 1st car's (Mazda) tranny at 4000 miles back in '88 At least I beat the guy ;P All my cars other that the newest 2001 roadster with free maintenance and only 10k at the odometer has redline oils - including engine on my A4 - pricey but worth it. VAP 05-29-2003, 06:33 AM My dealer will let me get 3 case prices for 36 quarts of anything... I can mix-n-match for the quantity. And I too only use Redline in all my cars, even the engine (30wt racing year-round). But with 4 cars counting my sons there are times when I still have to scrounge a single quart of something near re-order time. But in 3 case quantities I'm right at $5 per quart on almost everything. Mr.D-'97 A4q 12v 07-17-2003, 04:48 AM any I have one of those cheap $10 fluid transfer pumps. Oh, and Heutis was helping too. Anyway, we were pumping in the new oil and one of the hoses popped off the pump shooting gear oil every where, on me, on UrA4's leg, on my wall, etc. (I think Heutis was clear of the blast radius) UrA4 looked down at this stream of translucent fluid sqrited across his leg and said "so that's what it feels like". A good laugh was had by all. By the way, sometime you learn things the hard way. Check to make sure the hoses are tight on the pump! moribundman 07-17-2003, 10:22 AM |
