My 2.8 30v is chipped. The check engine light has been on before so I took it in straight away and the dealership reset it and told me that there had been some sort of power interuption! "Had I done anything to the car?" Gulp, I say "No" they tell me if it happens again they will need to completely check out the CPU etc...
So two days ago and 2 weeks after the last time it came on the light comes an again... I keep driving and last night it goes out and has not come on again.
Does it automatically reset?? Or is this some sort of core meltdown. Anyone have any ideas?
GK
1998.5 2.8 30v Q 5spd

The check engine light should just be a sign that something may be wrong with your emissions system. I read an article in today's USA Today saying that since the 96 model year on all US cars, this light only monitors the emission system and is on something of a hair trigger. It's causing numerous problems where people rush to the dealer thinking their engine's going to blow up, and in actuality it may only be their gas cap isn't on tight.
If you keep getting warnings, you probably want it checked out because it could be a sign of a more serious problem that could lead to failure of the catalytic converter ($$$). Of course, the dealer's probably going to need to check out the CPU to verify an emissions problem...
John G
96 2.8fwdM Pearl
