View Full Version : Upgrading old MAF sensor (078 133 471) to later type (078 133 471A)...

Found the old type sensor probe/element on my sons 1995 90S today which I knew from MikTip would give us problems if I just ran with the stock MAF sensor in a bored MAF housing. Didn't want to send it out for re-calibration and didn't want to buy the new style and toss a perfectly good sensor. So I did the next best thing. Made a sleeve with calibrated hole and bored the housing to same diameter as newer version MAF housings.
All specs/dimensions are identical to the later style probe assy. Only difference is a little more radius added at the tip and I used aluminum instead of plastic.
It's in the car now and working incredibly well. No codes or CEL's.

I love the smell of nitrous in the morning, but up til now only at early root canal appointments. Got individually adjustable cannula's for passenger and driver with headphones and a small tv?

scott12v@pghaudi 04-20-2003, 02:35 PM Does this mean you are going to the 1/4 mile track as more than a spectator/mechanic?
Maybe. The truth is,I don't like drag racing.
scott12v@pghaudi 04-20-2003, 03:35 PM Probably not quite enough to give Gjaime a good run.
Even at a 100 shot I wouldn't be making the power that Jaime does.
quattro90S6 04-20-2003, 08:03 PM i haven't been here in like a month and the past like week or so you are every other post and your MAF. However i want one of those, looks wicked nice.... wicked good stuff you got going there.

it and that way suited my needs and desires best.
Audiboy 04-21-2003, 10:39 AM (intake air temp), I was assuming the ECU figures the intake air temps to cope for timing and sorts using MAF and sampling the EGR temp sensor (which screws up intake air temps everytime the EGR opens up around cruising).
This is not while the Nitrous in on because yours should only come on at WOT and it should be using preprogrammed WOT tables and using MAF as fine tuning, but I was curious is a cold MAF housing after nitrous use will affect its output. Curious to see your results.
Also, what inputs does that controller have? Does it have RPM, manifold pressure and the throttle position?
Since it sprays at only WOT and the nozzle is directional I don't see it being a issue. The control unit just veries fuel pressure depending on bottle pressure and has a TPS switch. I will add a timing control unit and a RPM window switch. I was going to use the MSD stuff but a buddy of mine ,who has a shop, said he's had just about everything he's used/sold from MSD fail. I'll eventualy replace the injectors and FPR,I'm sure. First I want to see how it runs and what its limits are in as supplied kit form. I've saved what you've said on the subject for future referel. A lot of reasons went into this kit and some of which were not based on money and performance. I could remove this kit to sell it( or put on another car) and noting about it is specific to my car (except the purge tube being bent),which was a consideration. Any input you have is always welcome. I wanted something to do so I bought it. I figure it'll be fun and I'll gain some good working knowledge prior to putting one on another car,a 1.8T APR SIII to be specific.

Audiboy 04-21-2003, 11:19 AM that I think about it, it probably wont have any effect on the larger mass it's sitting on.
Over the weekend, I've hooked up my buddy's (CPP) S4 with his 3rd nitrous kit all sponsored by NX express as they need his car in the booth. They didn't give him a controller, which is something I'd rather have in his car so it can sense boost and rpm also. It's a double wet kit and I told him not to use it because the jets are too big and not matched with the fuel pressure. It's over 150 shot total - yikes. All for show now anyway. We tune it after the show this weekend - and I believe NX will have a controller for him too.
Eventually with mine, I'd rather have an electronic controller too as opposed to my hacked 4000 rpm switch and WOT switch. I'll check up on how yours is doing :)
100 shot would be nice hehe.
I've seen the pic of gjaime's trunk - looks like he is ready for one :) Shooting for 11's? ;)
So his will have to wait.Plus with his we have other issues to deal with. As far as what he's shooting for, that's easy. He wants to be number 1. ;-)
