View Full Version : slotted vs cross-drilled vs cross-drilled+slotted rotor babaholiang 03-27-2003, 10:18 PM Which one is the best? any opinions? Jason Teller 03-28-2003, 04:23 AM How about some humor about trying to pay the bills to run a site like AudiWorld? You obviously have no clue. Longwolf (Christian) 03-28-2003, 04:33 AM Matt H. 03-28-2003, 04:49 AM on the street theres no point to have X drilled IMO....they tend to increase wear on the pads. They are the best for rapid cooling after braking, but also means also they heat up faster. But, race cars have Xdrilled rotors, and they know more about braking than I do. Based on what I've read and learned, Slotted/xdrilled rotors for street are good for nothing but looks. If you are braking hard enough on the street to need the cooling effects of these rotors, you're going to jail soon :) As for racing, some others here should offer better insight than I have. xMIKEx 03-28-2003, 06:15 AM i know this is a free speech board to a certain degree but ive been unfortunatly running into a lot of his posts and are finding them tastless.. has there ever been audiworld banishing? haha thanx for keeping audiworld going we all (well most all of us) appreciate it Jason Teller 03-28-2003, 08:31 AM But that sometimes catches people unintentionally. What we need is a moderator for this forum. I need to talk to Bryan about that. Audiboy 03-28-2003, 09:03 AM avoiding gouging of the rotors. This is when the rotors look like a vinyl record from all the grooves. Stock rotors provide the best stopping power only when they are brand new or newly turned. Other than that, once they develop pits and grooves, you effectively have maybe 50 - 70% of it's area making contact with the pads, which are most likely grooved also Slots and holes help vent super heated gasses developed between the pad and the rotor, helping mainting the friction coefficient under heat. But most cross drilled, unless done by factory, have a tendency to crack around the holes - stress points. Also, I've read somewhere cross drilled was primarily done for weight reduction also. That probably doesn't apply to street setups. Having said that, I have warped my stock brakes twice on the AutoX since I started around '98. I switched to Brembo slotteds in '99 and till today, stopping power hasn't change. I've had over 30k miles on a mintek with them, and the only reason I replaced them was because I went with EBC greens in '01. I don't recomment EBC greens on stock flat rotors as they have a very high coefficient of friction and one can warp his rotors after a canyon run. The EBC's havn't done diddley to the rotor. They are still about 70% new and I switched them to reds because the greens will not work on a road course (race track). So, my Brembo slotteds have about 40k miles and still smooth scott12v@pghaudi 03-28-2003, 09:12 AM I thought I read that you were invloved in developing a high performance rad for the S4 and that it would also work on the A4. Am I dreaming things again? Audiboy 03-28-2003, 09:26 AM Basically, we worked with Fluidyne to have the appropriate measurements. They make one and sell it to us at a sponsorship price. We will be putting it in his S4 mid year this year once we pull out the engine to install secret turbos :) His car will be featured in a magazine when he is done. The availability is not listed on their website yet, but I believe they are done with it and one should be able to order it directly from them. I'll find out later xMIKEx 03-29-2003, 04:16 AM agreed.. But you need constantly brake/accelerate in order to notice it. I afraid by the time 12v car accelerate, the brakes will be as cold as a stone. :( On the other side Porsche on the race track would need xdriled for frequent treshhold braking before turn-in point. beep-beep 04-04-2003, 04:39 PM |
