I was helping a buddy of mine with his B6 S4. I was only able to get into the instrument cluster block of the ECU. I have not experienced this before...what gives?

What does the writing say on the part of the Interface that plugs into the OBD-II port?

Because it goes through several tries and then says it cannot connect. I have never had this happen before.

What am I looking for?

Try baud 1 count, Try baud 2 count.....baud 5 then check connection notice comes on. Connection is fine as it accesses instrument cluster but, no other modules.

But it seems likely you mean 311.2. That was released in Novemeber of 2003. You're trying to use that on a 2005.5 car. We're good, but we're not clairvoyant. You're going to need to use a more current version on that car.
