I bought a HEX-USB+CAN interface and started experimenting with it yesterday. Unfortunately there isn't much documentation available (in English) on how to tweak my car. Bentley hasn't released a factory repair manual for it yet. So far I've been working with Google translations of the de.openobd.org page for the 4F A6.

The first thing I wanted to do was disable the seatbelt chime. I selected the Instruments (17) control module in VAG-COM and checked out the soft coding. Unfortunately it looks nothing like the coding described on openobd.

VAG Number 4F0 910 900 A
Soft Coding 0016111
Component KOMBIINSTR M73 H10 0630
Shop # Imp: 444 WSC 09401
Extra: Geraet 00079

I was expecting something like 0000260, which would indicate a US car with no extra options and repeating optical/audible seatbelt warnings. Can anyone give me some pointers on this?

Thanks,
Mike

...but with going into detail with that stuff, we noticed that the instrument cluster was coded incorrect by the factory. At least this is what you see when you compare reality with the docs.

The basic job in your case is, that this one is currently coded to euro-spec and also euro-ncap seatbelt warning, if you want to get rid of it, select 0016101 as new coding.

Unfortunately 0016101 gave me a warning light for the tire pressure monitoring system, which my car doesn't have, and a constant chime which persists even when the car is turned off. Resetting the module to 0016111 didn't fix it, and VAG-COM didn't detect any fault codes. I guess I'll be visiting the dealer tomorrow and claiming ignorance.

So I continued to experiment, and I seem to have fixed the problem.

I'm not sure why VAG-COM returned 0016111 as the original coding. According to openobd, that coding indicates:

+0016 - tire pressure control of
1 - remainder of the world link steering wheel (RdW)
1 - belt warning Europe NCAP (optical durable warning, acoustic warning for 91 seconds actively)
1 - pointers, scales FROM (Kl.15 & Kl.58 out)

When I recoded module 17 to 0016101, the car started to think it had a tire pressure monitoring system. My trip computer also began displaying a weird mix of miles/km and gallons/litres.

With nothing to lose except a trip to the dealer tomorrow, I recoded the module to the settings I wanted according to openobd:

+0000 - no extra options
2 - the USA (US)
0 - no belt warning
3 - pointers and scales (2nd characteristic - Kl.15 & Kl.58 out)

Everything is working fine now, and the seatbelt chime is gone.

My fuel gauge and mileage estimates seem to be broken now. Do you think I should set +0001 - second tank characteristic and/or Quattrocodierung?

Also, I have the bi-xenon adaptive headlights with automatic self-leveling. Should I set +0064 - AFS (dyn. LWR with Advanced Frontlighting system)?

1BE = Spring/Damper - Sports Suspension
7K0 = without Tire Pressure Monitoring
8Q5 = Headlight Range Control (automatic/dynamic with cornering light)

+0001 = Quattro
+0064 = Headlight Range Control (automatic/dynamic with cornering light)

I'll try it later today. Thanks for the help.

Is a master list of those 3-character codes available anywhere?

Uwe, any chance of a VAG-COM label file for the 4F?

Mike

You can get a current set of VAG-COM labels from the ross-tech pages, there is also a file which contains 4F instrument cluster coding informations, but since there are some restrictions, it is not 100% complete yet.

Best would be to download the following files and place them in your "/VAG-COM/labels/" folder.

4F0-910-181.lbl
4F0-910-279.lbl
