How do I get the dipped beam turned on when ignition is on or even better alternator is charging? Would this be a simple adjustment of some parameter in one of the ECUs or do I need to alter the electrical wiring? Could I do this using VAG-COM?

I drove Subaru for the past eight years. I never, ever thought about headlights. They were one when the car was on, and off when I was enjoying a beer inside.

I turn my headlights on before I put my allroad in drive. I turn them off when I hear the squealing.

I long for simpler times...

VW gives you DRLs and the VW people usually want to get rid of them. Audi doesn't, and you people want them.

On an Allroad, the headlights are not computer-controlled. If you want DRLs, you'll have to make some sort of hardware mods. Since Canadian models are required to have DRLs, I would think that looking at the differences between a Canadian spec car and a US spec one in the wiring diagrams would reveal the "right" way to have DRLs.

Subaru has been doing it for decades:

If the headlight switch is on, then headlights should be on. It's just that simple!

Those who wish to DTLs would leave the headlight switch in the on position, never ever touching it. Those that don't want the headlights on in the day, would leave the switch off.

My car will then have the parking lights on when I leave the car, so it does not work for me. Perhaps my car is for a different market than your...

I'm afraid it is not about the grass... I have five cars and four of them have DRL. When I use my Audi I keep forgetting turning the lights on and lights on are required during daytime in Sweden.

My entire point is that Subaru owners never worry about their lights - EVER.

You leave them on all the time. When you turn the ignition off, they go off, just like the radio. When you turn the ignition on, they turn on.

In my many years of driving subarus before my Audi, this seemed to be a flawless system.
