The concern was raised that we may have it installed in our cars w/o knowing it. Maybe you've run into this kind of device during your R&D?
Just a curious question.

If you get in an accident severe enough to deploy any of the restraints, it records various parameters, such as vehcicle speed, RPM, whether you're on the brakes, etc.
However, it takes very special stuff to read and decode this info. Your dealer can't do it. I've been in this business for almost 5 years now and have yet to see the tool that can. I assume it exists, but VW/Audi keeps that very "close to the vest".

Most people don't like to be "controlled or monitored" by some computer, specially if they don't know about.
At this time I would guess that more people jump on this topic to find about details and possible prevention of -- hmm - whatever they want to prevent.
Thank you for your input, it certainly makes sense.

actually, I'd rather disable the radio or something like it, but not the airbags, the way people drive here?? oh no.....!

We, at work, have the ability to download GM, newer Ford, and Isuzu boxes. The data ranges but often includes thinga like speed (measured at tranny, not actual), brake and accelerator position, seatbelts buckled/unbuckled, etc.
It has been brought up in litigation to strengthen a case, but we can;t hang our hat on it. Each new model year has a CDR which records more and more; brave new world.

http://vetronix.com/diagnostics/cdr/</a

...and of course validates we live in a controlling and litigious society.
