Question: I purchased a VAG-COM serial interface (I think it's a Ross-Tech interface but am unsure what kind) and the OBD connector from a guy here on AW. I then downloaded the shareware version of VAG-COM off Ross-Tech's site and, as it directs, am trying to "test" the interface before I register the software.

When I try this, the test does not work, no matter which COM port I select -- it either says that the port is "already in use" or that it's "not found." My laptop is running XP Professional.

Anyone have any advice? Many thanks.

some other program is hogging the port, usually a hotsynch application. Either kill that app or configure it so that it doesn't look for your PDA on that port.

but that's not it, as that's using a USB port. How can I tell what apps are using what ports?

What I usually do:

Start -> Run -> MSCONFIG

Go to Statrup Tab, check "disable all" and reboot.

Assuming it then works, you have to find the offending app by process of elimination.
