i understand kinda what it is (some kind of diagnostic tool you can hook up to your car) but i really dont understand what the benefits of having one is or what it can do for you.

I just bought a 98 a4, would i benefit from having someone vag it and why?

diagnostics of your car. Ross-Tech sells both the software and the interface cable that plugs into your car's diag. port and your laptop (or Palm). By running certain diagnostic operations, you may get Diag. Trouble Codes (DTC's) that relate to problematic system modules or components. Once the module/component is replaced and 'codes' are re-run, that particular DTC no longer shows up.

I'm new at Audis and the VAG-COM but I hope I've given you some basics. I saw no one else was responding to your question...same as what has happened to me. I didn't feel good about it.
