View Full Version : Coolant temperature and lambda sensor voltage

I have only had the VAG-Hex unit a couple of weeks and it has saved my much trouble with my wifes '99 Jetta. Two CEL clears and counting. One for the loose gas cap, and one when I washed the engine and got a string of "misfires".

Now I am trying to learn how to use the program On my '96 A6Q and could use some guidance.
Though I looked hard and long at my Bentleys last night, I could not understand how to directly read Engine coolant temperature or see what the voltage at the O2 (Lambda sensors) is.
This function must be part of the many "blocks" but My fumbleing around with the screens and buttons has not left me with any sense of accomplishment.

This may fall in the subject of "user understanding" but that's where I am at this time.

Perhaps if I could get to these two functions, something inside my feeble brain would be enlightened as to "how it all works"!

Would anyone care to help?
TIA

To check coolant temp in your car (as per the Bentley CD):

[Select]
[01 engine]
[Meas. Blocks - 08]
Enter group 004 and click [Go!]

Coolant temp should be displayed in degrees C in the third field.

To check coolant temp in your car (as per the Bentley CD):

[Select]
[01 engine]
[Meas. Blocks - 08]
Enter group 033 and click [Go!]

The values in fields 2 and 4 should show the voltages of the front O2 sensors in bank 1 and bank 2, respectively.<ul><li><a href="http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/tour/main_screen.html">http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/tour/main_screen.html</a</li></ul>

and how to interpret them all? I've had my VAG-Hex a few weeks too and I feel like I'm using about 1/100th of it's potential. Is there a VAG-COM Bible or something that I can reference to learn all the features and diagnostics? Thanks.

Also, check that online demo and this page:<ul><li><a href="http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/index.html">http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/index.html</a</li></ul>

Andy

Thank you for your sussinct description.

I have not had an opportunity to try these steps, but my reccolection had the O2 readings in %.

Is that only a matter of incorrect display units?
(It could have been another Meas. Block entirely)

I do have the Bentley CD, and did a search on "Coolant temperature" There were so many references (62 IIRC) how is one supposed to extract the useful operations from that? The many pages I looked at did not get me the information I was looking for.

I am sure I will "warm up" to the process, These explanations and instructions are a big help.
