There seems to be alot of conflicting information on this. Some people believe that changing the soft coding to match will make the ECU work in a different car.

This is not true (as least as far as I've seen). The ECU's themselves have to be identical (EXACT same part number).

IF the part numbers are the same THEN you can recode them to work. Otherwise you are SOL!!
