Where can I get a timing belt for a 1997 A4TQ from?
What is the part number(s)? I may be able to get one through a family friend who owns an auto spares store.
Also is there an easy way to inspect the timing belt? Without taking the front end of the car off. (The previous owner insisted that it had been changed to the new type, but I can find any evidence to support his claim.)
Finally how long should it take to replace the belt? A full day?
I would appreciate any answers to the above.

Its not the Belt is a new type, well actually the new belt is different than old one by one tooth.
But the main thing is the Tensioner which is revised.
With some fiddling and light you may be able to see it, but you have to know what you are looking for.
Either way, the previous owner should be able to tell you who serviced it and you might then ring the service dept for a record if they did fit the revised tensioner

Sorry I didnt explain myself properly. I understand the tensioner is the main different part, I have pictures of the two types. So if I can see it then I should be able to recognise it.
But I thought the timing belt is covered by a cover of some kind. Therefore to see it, i would need to remove the cover. As most will know, it is hard to remove anoything in the engine bay of an Audi, or any modern car for that matter.
I have already called the places that did the previous services and of the two places neither had any records of a belt change. I asked the previous owner about this after I have bought the car and he insisted that the belt had been changed. As the sale had already been done i figured he had no reason to lie to me.
At the end of the day I dont want the belt to break, so I want to be sure.

Nothing is more sure than chaging it anyway.
But costs $$$.
The timing cover can be unclipped and moved forward about a inch, then you may be able to see it looking down with a good light.
