The JL setup is ok.. but only ok. It really depends on what sound you are trying to get. I don't feel that the JL has the tightness to get a good accurate sound. Besides there too common. But thats my opinion. I feel where they lack in sound and quality they make up for in the convience of their stealth boxes. My suggestion, consider maybe a Boston or Kicker Solo-baric, they both require small inclosures so you could custome make something that could be somewhat stealth.
As for amps...
PPI's are very nice. Alpine v12 are better. They are rated very conservitively. Their THD rating is much better than what they advertise. It all depends on what you are going to use them for. I could get more specific if I knew what results you were trying to get...

The stealthbox is actually pretty accurate. I was originally worried about the two free air woofers being a bit loose, but with a small amount of tweaking, they can be used for just about EVERY kind of music.
You can make them hit extremely hard for, dunno...say White Zombie's Supersexy Swinging Sounds Remix track 9...or follow intense, quick low guitar like Stereophile Test Disc 3 (forget the track and artist...sorry)...on and on and on....
The tweaking I use is a PPI PAR 225 to adjust sub frequency (centered at 40Hz...forget the Q value I use).
Cross it over a bit high & you actually get a bit of rear fill midbass.
It isn't 3 or 4 CV Strokers, but it integrates perfectly...
Go visit www.theautophile.com . Those guys sell seriously high-end car audio & NEVER hesitate to recommend a JL Stealthbox if it is available for your car.
just my 2 centavos
steve

This is the fun part about being a stereofile... My intentions when I offer advice is to help someone achieve the cleanest most accurate sound possible. The fun is that there are so many different ways to go, so many different combinations, so many different results. Since we are talking about stereos for Audis, I don't think JL is good enough. Put JL in your Z28 or Mustang but keep it out of my Audi. I've heard White Zombie sound good through MTX subs. They're not going in my Audi... As for mid-bass, you don't want it to come out of your subwoofer, it is the lowest point of your directional sound, it is needed for proper immageing, and should be produced by your deck and door speakers. Any sounds lower than mid-bass, non-directional, should be produced by your subwoofer, hence the name...
Don't get me wrong though, steve knows what he is talking about. He can help you get good sounds in your car. But like I said I try for extremly clean sounds...
Good luck
Jason C

Can't comment on the stealthbox, but I'd say PPI for the amp... But you left out a great amp... Soundstream Reference!
Rich Quinlan
Nowhere near stock 1.8tqms

Quinland

Now, I'm confused... Seems to me as though JL has won more competition sound QUALITY trophies than any other subwoofer manufacturer....
I use 3 JL 10W6's in my spare tire well. I use this many due to my GREATLY varying tastes. They can go from being extremely accurate, to being quite loud, and shake the car a bit.
But I auditioned many, many subs, and the W6's are some fine drivers.
It's natural to favor a product you own, but JL had to EARN my purchase.. I didn't get them because of name alone.
Rich Quinlan
'97 GASCA 2nd all-germany Amateur 251-500

I have both PPI, Rockford, and Alpine. By for PPI are of highest quality. Alpine not even close. Rockford close, but not as musical.

I very interested in knowing what brands you compared them with before you got your JL's.
I know of one Lanzar 12 that could do what your 3 10's can do. I'm not saying that JL's are bad, I know of many brands that they are much better than. But there are still a few brands which are better than JL's. Don't forget though, the box can make or break your sound. Jason G was inquiring about the stealthboxes. I wanted to point out to him that you could go with a sub that required a small enclosure and get better sound than the stealthbox and still have the space in your trunk. I think a major reason JL's are in so many cars is only because of the stealtboxes. It's a nice feature with the benifet of having good sound and keeping trunk space. But I think you are compromising SOME sound quality with a stealthbox. I guess it's a matter of weighing all the factors, you really have to know what result you want first. Should I compromise some sound and keep my whole trunk, or should I compromise some space and have better sound???
