Here's a dyno of the previous E36 Euro M3. The E46 M3 has more torque at any point in the rev range than this car. It has a 2nd peak that is higher than the 1st one so the peak torque is higher up the rev range than the E36 Euro but it has 80% of it's torque available at 2000rpm. It's no S2000 screamer & anyone that's driven one can testify to that.

For the uneducated amongst us, the S4 isn't ever going to catch the M3. The C32 has a lot more torque than the S4 & it loses out the higher the speeds get (contrary to popular belief). Check the link below. The C32 does 180-200km/h in 4.2 seconds & the M3 in 3.4 seconds. A local mag also found the M3 over 2 seconds quicker than the C32 from 125mph-155mph. Remember the C32 has more HP & a lot more torque than the new S4 & weighs less as well.

Here's the facts. The RWD 6 speed manual with M-diff & high gearing gets similar torque to the wheels than the low geared inefficent slushbox at most dynos down here. In turn the losses to the wheels of the C32 will probably be less than the quattro S4.

M3 vs C32

I don't think the S4 is all about the 0-60 times, etc. Yes the M3 is quick but I would like to see how quick it is in the wet and snow. Even if it had snows on it the S4 would walk on it in fowl weather. I believe that is what the S4 is about, a well rounded sports sedan that can do amazing stuff in any weather. If you want 0-60, get the M3 then. It is a very nice car but not a practical year round car (at least up here in the North East).

AWD rules in inclement weather. I don't think I'd go racing in the rain or snow anyway. Your skills & car might be the bomb in the rain, but the old lady in a beat up 1969 beetle with windows all misted up might not see you coming. Anyway, AWD inspires a lot more confidence. Some guys here were saying the S4 would beat the M3 after 30mph in the dry.

that's why I wish people would get off the debate on the two cars..

S4 has its strengths as well as the M3, both for different reasons.

have a wheel dyno of my E46, but I need to scan it. I'm afraid it's a bit jerky because it had low octane fuel but it is still higher than the E36 M3 at any point. In fact, it has more torque at idle than the MAXIMUM torque of the 2.8 30v Audi A4. You can pull of cleanly from 1000rpm in any gear. Do yourself a favour & test drive one. It doesn't have the mid range torque plateau my S4 had & the effortless pull on boost, but it isn't lacking in torque at all. Here's a dyno I found on the net of an E46 M3. Very peaky, isn't it?

E46 M3 dyno

power to the wheels? Must be that magic from Munich. Your so FOS, it is not even funny. :)

BTW, a Stage 1 B5 S4 puts out 502 NM flat from 1850-5K+ RPm; but, you knew that 'cause you have one. HA HA HA! BTW, I have driven an E46 and opted for better. :)
