<b>Head Unit:</b> Kenwood DDX7015 double din touch screen.
<b>Nav Unit (DVD based):</b> Kenwood KNA4100
<b>Ipod hookup:</b> Ipod 4th gen/40gb + Dension Icelink
<b>Dash Kit:</b> Metra from autotoys.com
<b>Total Parts &amp; Labor (excluding Ipod,Icelink):</b> $2200

I did hire an installer for the installation, too chicken to mess around with the electronics :).

<b>Ipod + Icelink:</b>
Initially, I was gonna put the ipod in the sunglass holder bin thinking that the new head unit would have full control on the ipod. That's not the case, it can only do skip forward, previous and volume adjustment and no display whatsoever of track, id3 tag, artist, playlist etc... I'm disappointed because of how expensive the Icelink is for such a limited functionality.
The Ipod+Icelink combo is not fully mounted yet, using some velcro for now, hence the icelink wire sticking out of the sunglass holder in the pics below.

Do you know if you can connect the icelink to the standard Audi systems? ( Ihave the satnav+)

Great install. I have a similar one posted on AudiWorld, but I went with a flip up screen and the DVD/Nav in dash, to be able to put movies in easily. Keep me posted on where you decide to put IPOD. I have an Ipod mini and use the itrip FM transmitter. Still no place great to keep it. For you, with cord, you can go to glove compartment, but then can't change songs easily. That is how the ipod BMW hookup works.
Another cool option is run the wire around the headliner to the rear view mirror and hang the IPOD from the mirror. Then it is in line of vision. Saw one done like this. Real slick.

Actually, my head unit is also a dvd/cd/mp3 player, the screen moves down to allow you to put/change disc. The nav unit is just used for Nav function so that's why there's no need to put in front but in the trunk.

Yep, will keep you posted on the ipod location but won't be for a while. I have to back to Paris for a few months.

Did you use the wiring harness from Autotoys also, or did your installer take care of that part. Also, what do you get in your dash display. Is there an error message or does it just stay blank? Great install by the way. I plan on doing the same in the next week or so. I'm just trying to get everything lined up.

I can see that you had someone install the Kenwood (very nicely). Would it be easy to install the Icelink yourself (i'm clueless about DIY) ? or would it be best to get a professional installer to do it?? I don't want to order something over the internet and then find I've got a bunch of useless cables :)

It should not be difficult:

1 - Pull the symphony from the dash by using the radio removal keys (Any dealership/installer should have them or you can order them on autotoys.com)
2 - Plug the icelink cable to the CD changer port on the back of the symphony.
3 - Run/hide the icelink wire the way you like to have the ipod mounted at a convenient location (I thought the sunglass holder would be the perfect location to store the ipod but found out that you cannot change artist, playlist from the head unit)

I'd hire an installer because of step 3.

Hope this helps,
Eric

Thanks Jim. Those incompetent people at autotoys sent me the wrong (VW) harness, the installer had to take care of it. There's no error message, it just stays blank in the the dash display.
LEt me know how it goes with your install.

Looks like you can't have the icelink and the CD changer!

Your install looks great!! I currently have a 2003 A4 Cab , 1.8T and am upgrading to the new S4 Cab. My question is regarding sunglare, when you have the top down during the day, due you experience any glare from the sun? Causing the screen to not be visible at times or does the adjustability of the screen eliminate that? If so, does it eliminate it completely or most of the time?
