Chris Alf Arkin 04-07-2005, 07:28 AM There's a VW dealer here in Wilmington, they claim they can service my car, Bob King, any feedback on them? Alf Arkin 04-07-2005, 07:40 AM I have owned nothing but Audi or VW. I still have a bunch of tools and spares, though I got rid of most before moving because Mayflower charges by the lb. My interests have changed though, and I don't enjoy working on my car as much. Also, I don't much like Audi's NEW models, and I resent that they have made them so difficult to service. Changing the timing belt used to be a 5 minute job, now it's real pain. JCF 04-07-2005, 04:26 PM Most of them suck ass, but one or two of the techs and a salesman are on the NCEuro.org forums and they're good guys. OldSchool AG 04-07-2005, 06:50 PM if you can change a timing belt on a VW or Audi in 5 minutes. I thought I was doing pretty good getting the B2 and B3 5-cylinder cars wrapped up in about 2 hours. ;-) As for the new models, I wholeheartedly agree. Just did the t-belt on my TT quattro about a month ago, so maybe I'm still bitter. I probably could have finished it in one long, sweaty, bloody knuckled day, but I chose to stretch it out over 3 or 4, not sure if it was to save my sanity, or prolong my suffering. Either way, I'm glad to have that behind me, and the next still 59K away. AndrewWK 04-08-2005, 03:09 AM Do NOT consider this a plug though, but they are an audi dealership. Andrew bluevr6 04-08-2005, 12:30 PM BluDemon 04-08-2005, 02:47 PM They will change your oil and do brake stuff but that's about all. C Alf Arkin 04-09-2005, 09:45 AM 5 minutes was theoretically possible if you didn't have to remove A/C components. All you had to do is remove the black sheet metal cover on the timing belt. Then it was all if front of you, the sprockets were notched, all you had to do was line up the new belt. It was also very easy to inspect the timing belt for wear, to prevent nasty surprises. Oil leaks from the valve cover gasket could soak the belt. With the A4 you have to remove the whole front end just to get at the belt. Same thing for the water pump. I think Audi planned it that way, it's make-work for their dealers. But yeah, I always took my time, safety first,,, and adjusting the valves (COLD) was almost fun. OldSchool AG 04-11-2005, 08:51 AM I've done both, would take the A4 t-belt job any day. Yes, putting the front in service position is a pain, but at least you have room. On the TT, you have the inch or two between the front of the engine and inner passenger fender. Some joys including jacking the engine up & down to get at various fasteners, oh, and, unless you remove a whole lot more stuff than I did, it is not possible to completely remove the front engine mount bracket, so you unbolt it and it's loose, just gotta move it around in there as you work. I'm getting angry just thinking about it. ;-) |
