1. Talk to many photographers to see if you like them. Remember, this is the person that you will spend much of your day with, so getting one you don't like will be very painful at a time when you'll have enought to worry about.

2. Pay attention to what is in the package they offer, and what is not. things you may want: DVD with all of your wedding photos, engagement package, website for ordering, and such.

3. Many photogs use film. They generally shoot around 400 shots. I went with a digital guy, and he shot over 1700. Also, with digital, they can look at the shot there and then to see if they need a retake.

Generally, you will get some sort of website so you can order pics. with ours, we ordered a few for us and friends, but then just told people to look at the site and buy what they want.

We also got 3 or 4 CDs with all of the images 30 days later so we can print whatever we want ourselves. Other photogs said it would be at least a year.

4. Make sure your shooter is familiar with the wedding and reception venue. you don't want to be their guinea pig.

There are probably many more ideas, but these are the things that I felt were important.

incidentally, we used Craig Larsen. He is very good. He was fun and had some very good ideas for shots.

http://www.craiglarsen.com/</a

Pay attention to the photographer's style. I went to a friend's wedding, and while the photographer was good and had a good eye (i.e. took a lot of unique shots), I found that he was a bit annoying and in the way. In other words, he'd walk right up during the ceremony and take a close up pic, or during the first dance, he was all over the dance floor getting in their face and taking close up pics. While the pics turned out great, as a guest, I didn't like his style. To me, a photographer should not be constantly in the way or the center of attention.

Did our wedding and I was really happy with the photos. Several guests even commented on how great the photographer was at capturing everything without being too intruding. Not the cheapest but not the most expensive either.

Alex Studio
