After reading through a Vortex post about a guy who had a 16vT 'Rocco stolen last week, I have decided to not flaunt my car(s) online anymore.
This dood got his car stolen, and his turbo engine ripped out of it, all electronics, wheels, and drivetrain taken, and an uber rare zender 'rocco wing broken in half (but left on the car). Spraypainted on the side of the car was a name of a PNW dub club, and a dub sticker slapped inside the engine bay.
Obviously, this car was scoped out because it was known exactly what was inside the engine bay. This lead the owner to point the blame finger at vortexers due to his extensive activity on the board.
Have any of you worried about this type of thing happening to your ride? Aside from alarms, do you take any other precautions to circumvent theft, or the potential of theft from people surfing boards that you post on?

Just because this happened to one guy doesnt mean it will happen to you and not on this forum, since almost 70% of the people that post here know each other or have met at some point. But none the less you should always have a little something extra on your car so theifs cant get away with it. Like on my car I have a fuel kill switch, and its placed somewhere in the car ;). Whenever I park it somewhere where I dont feel its safe, I turn it off, So they can break in to it but they will never move it. I remember the guy with the red scirocco, that is a very sad story, and blaming people of the vortex, I probably would do the same thing. What I dont understand is I remember the guy saying that the car was in a safe and secure garage, So how did the jackers get in? Anyway welcome to this ****ed up world we live in, seriously I heard that they ripped his alarm off and left it where the car was.

it seems like there has been a pretty hefty number of cars being listed on the 'tex as being stolen recently. its hard to not point your finger when it seems to be pointed in the proper direction.

I think if you post a mod list it could be used as a 'wish list' for potential thieves. Also, any pics of your license plate or posting where you live is a bad idea.
The 1st thing to remember is that if someone really wants your car they will find a way to get it, it's not worth your life (and possibly not worth killing them).
I've always thought that advertising what you have may put you at more risk for theft, stickers and badges may look cool but they let everyone know what you have.
Buy a good alarm and have it professionally installed by a specialty audio shop or good friends.
Buy a club style device, yes they are not the most convienient things but they are cheap and will keep the joyriders away.
Good wheel locks! I'd reccommend 2 different styles with 1 of each style on each wheel.
Be careful where you choose to park, I know in this situation that it did not prevent theft but it is usually something to keep in mind. Living in an apartment may put you at more risk since everyone knows your schedule and when you are gone.
Good insurance, make sure you choose a company that is going to stand by their responsibility in the case of any claims. The best way to check this out is by getting other peoples feedback either on the forums or during meets/shows.
That's about all that comes to mind, please feel free to add to the list if you have any suggestions.

but the PNW VW/Audi scene is kind of shaddy. I have had stuff stolen from me a few times. One case is a set of imported 3pc RH wheels(check pic poster). They were one of a kind in Wa., If not the states. The importer had a hard importing a replace for me 9mo. If it was a close community or family I think I would have heard something about them. That way justice could be dealt. If not by the police by the end of my hand, (`cause I'm Rick James B!TCH) Will the motor for this car ever show up..... no cause there are too many punks that would rather shop on the net or car shows for the mods they can steal...... if they do I think instant karma is called for. Throw a Molotov into the car and call it good

... the thieves are either actively on vortex... or at the very least know enough about the local VW community to try to misdirect blame/credit for the crime to a certain local VW club.

... a car that you've had for 9 years and spent countless hours working on, not to mention the money... it raises it to an entirely different and totally enraging level.
The kind of scumbags that would knowingly steal an older highly modified project car -- something that is basically irreplaceable -- and trash it are worse than animals and have no soul. They quite literally deserve a bullet between the eyes, if you ask me.
HOWEVER, I would discourage anyone, including my friend in this situation, from exacting revenge via a firearm or any other means that would put them at risk of going to jail.
To add insult to injury the Seattle police are doing absolutely nothing to investigate this and many, many other car thefts. I went through almost exactly the same thing five years ago.

friend of mine - when I asked about isn't that advertising for thieves? He told me last time they did an insurance job for theft on a car like that they handed the guy a razor and told him that would be his best defense. Take off the ****ing stickers.

My girlfriend had her whole stereo ripped out of her saturn, and some other guy had '$7000 in rims' taken off his truck - they left it on blocks. This was in her building in westlake. It has a gate with remote openers. They have it on tape (garage security cameras) and the cops still acted like we were wasting their time.

tickets for 5 over in the length of time you 'wasted'. Seems like if it isn't a high profile 'case' it's only a crime if there is revenue to be made.
