I have had this ongoing problem with my laptop and it has been quite frustrating. The problem is that my dvd drive doesnt seem to like to read properly. Every 2-3 months, for no reason whatsoever, it just stops reading. The hardware is fine, and the software doesn't need an update either.

I usually end up calling tech support, and they tell me to do a few things... First step, go into the device manager, and uninstall the drive, then restart the computer, and it may work. In this case, no, this does not work. So next they usually tell me to do something long listed and I cant recall the details.

So if you can please help me out, if you know how to, it would be much appreciated if you could email me.

Seeming that it's finicky tells me it's something to do with the hardware.

Does it happen randomly, or with a specific DVD, etc.? Is the drive a removable one? If it is, check the contacts for any dust.

This has happened a few times before. Each time it is solved simply by going into certain hardware lists somewhere (much more in detail than hardware manager) and it is fixed once I reset something.

it is quite annoying to have to deal with this. The laptop warranty expired a month ago. I know this because that is what the guy on the last phonecall to tech support said.

I *NEVER* have any problems with my PC at home. In fact the last time I installed an OS patch, hmmm probably two years now. I install the stuff I only need to and use, a lot of stuff out there that is "free" and "too good to be true" contains a lot of malware. In fact, my old Linux got 0wn3d before but never my PC (vulnerability in the secure ftp).

Unlike some people, I know how to use FTP and torrent unlike some other OSX user here ;)
