I've been having a problem with my 12V V6 engine for the last two months -- nobody has been able to figure out why it's ticking. Some of you may have seen my posts in the
90-80-Coupe quattro-Cabriolet Forum.
I had some machine work done on the engine (see sig.)and replaced the hydraulic lifters after having blamed them for the ticking. Well with the new 268 Cams installed and new lifters, the ticking became much louder so that I could hear it inside the car at highway speeds...we removed the 268's and put the OEM Cams back in and the car was back to just the original ticking.
After trying various synthetic oils, oil additives and treatments, replacing the hydraulic lifters again and re-checking everything, we have been unable to address the noise issue. I had the cams measured for spec and although they measured up ok, I sent them back to Eurospec at their request and they confirmed that the 268's are ok. Oil pressure and compression tests checked out ok and now we are concentrating on oil pressure only at the top of the engine and anything that might be interfering with that (oil non-return valves, pressure relief valves, etc.).
The mechanic is Charles Maxwell at Superior Transmission in Markham. He's an audi specialist formerly of Agincourt Autohaus.
I have faith in these guys but a second opinion might be valuable at this point as we are running out of inspiration. If anyone can recommend a mechanic with plenty of 12V V6 experience or can offer other useful information, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks, from Toronto
