Has anyone tried to compare these two cars? Which is faster in a straight line? better handling? and design...
Prelude SH

I believe that the 180 hp will be slower than the Boxster, and the 225 hp version will be faster than the Boxster. Not too sure about handling and braking though.
I am really not too impressed by the styling of the Boxster. When it first came out, I really wanted to drool over it. I would look at it from all angles, looking to say "wow", but didn't ever find the shape too exciting. In fact, I think it is a bit bland.
The TT looks really exciting on paper, but I will reserve judgement until I see it in person. That is the only way to make a fair comparison.
Mike (just my opinion)

I agree with MichaelB, the 225hp will be more
efficient than the Boxter, 17hp more, 4wd, more
compact. I saw a black one with 18" it was really
marvelous. The first impression was that the
real one was more compact and agessive than the
pictures I've seens some months ago. On pictures
it seems quite long but in fact it is very, very
compact. Another point to consider is that the
Boxter is the low end Porsche and the TT is the
high end Audi in this category. The last point is that you can almost buy the TT 180hp plus the TT 225hp for the price of the Boxter :-) In my
opinion only the Porsche brakes are better than
the Audi one. Moreover in the TT you got "lot
of space" compare to the Boxter for roughly the
same dimension.
Greetings Laurent

I skimmed a German mag in Borders a few weeks ago, and the TT beat the boxter arount the Nurburing (spelling?). Also, I have noted that the torsion in the TT is LESS efficient than that in the A4 (A4 loss from engine to wheels 7%, European car segment on a4 1.8 chips, TT somwhere recently)....maybe 220 is like a 200 A4, fast, but needing a chip :-).
I want a TTq, that is all... :-)
jeff

I didn't post the above message in the forum.
Anyhow,
If you compare manufacturer's figures for the 225 bhp TT & the Boxster, the TT is faster in 0-60 and top-end speed. Because the 225 bhp TT is well over a year from reaching U.S. shores, there are no direct comparisons in U.S. car magazines between these two cars.
As you might expect, the 180 bhp TT (front driver) was 1.3 seconds slower to 60 mph than the Boxster in the November Road & Track [7.4 and 6.1 seconds, respectively].
Other interesting stats from their test include:
Lateral Acceleration--180 bhp TT, .91g / Boxster, .93g
AND
Braking (Attention Laurent!) 60-0 mph--180 bhp TT, 116 ft. / Boxster 120 ft.
Keep in mind that these figures for the TT will improve when the 225 bhp variant arrives because it has more bhp & torque, more grip & front/rear balance (thank you, quattro), and vented discs all around (instead of just in front). Also remember that when the Porsche Boxster S arrives, it's a whole new story.

The British magazine Autocar Weekly compare the Boxster and the TT 225bhp quattro a few issues back. The conclusion was that the Boxster is still the better handling car marginally. The TT was faster in a straight line.
However, that magazine never like Audi.

In the German magazine Auto Motor und Sport issue nr 20 (23 September 1998) the 225 bhp TT outclassed the Boxter in almost every discipline. The TT scored 615 points compared to the Boxter`s 549 (it`s really a BIG difference).
The only general area where Porsche was better was when engines were compared.
The TT is faster either way you measure it.
And I am going for a 1 1/2 hr test drive on Friday!!!
Stig-Rune Reese
96 A4 1.8 Avant

I read somewhere(EC i think) that the TT is faster in paper, but the Boxter is much faster in a race course.
Later

Rented a Boxster with a friend in Berlin, and drove to Lueneburg(?) outside Hamburg. A lot of fun, but boy does the lack of space suck. We both had 22" carry on bags, and couldn't fit both in the trunk. Had to leave one at the Avis counter and dump the clothes in the spare space.
