Now that school is out, it's very easy to be going 70+ on the Dulles TollRoad, especially at 630am. I was actually going with the flow of traffic and not meandering through lanes of slower vehicles, but i looked in my rearview and what do i see??? FFX County's finest...
First ticket in along time (Damn R32), I researched it this morning, and i believe 19 mph over is 4 points. Is it worth showing up for this in court?

of the points.
I might take the old tactic of delaying as much as possible to see if the officer transfers. who knows, but thanks.

By driving with the flow of traffic you are speeding... he picked you out and your fellow drivers got lucky. Get coverage, get a detector </Mike Valentine>

everyone speeds. the thing is, there were no slower vehicles, everyone was going 70+. i'm not really even upset about this because i drive 100+ miles a day and sooner or later, you get picked out of the crowd.

Esp considering the cop had slowed down from doing 90, and traffic around me was doing 75.

and you got a ticket for it? I've done it countless times, drive by at 72, 73, or 74 MPH with the cruise on. The V1 would be going off like crazy but because it's not reckless, it's usually not worth their time to write the ticket. I'm really surprised you got one.
If it was in Fairfax County, don't bother going to court. Not only will you not get a break, but you'll end up paying $57 more than you ordinarily would have thanks to court costs.
Like others have said, find a traffic school, take it and take your +5 points. You'll be in good shape.

.. but w/ a radar detector, expect a near 0% chance of that.
I can care less what the flow of traffic is. Unless the people getting angry want to pay for my gas, they can chug along behind me at 10MPH over the speed limit. That, and they need to quit their whining about gas prices.

in va beach, you pay court costs regardless of whether or not you go to court to argue the ticket as well... figure that one out.

Unlawful use of radar detection device
Statute: 46.2-1079
Fine: $40
Processing Fee: $62
Total: $102
I had mine hidden once too. The officer knew I had one. He gave me a choice of moving violation or admitting I had a detector. I obviously took the detector fine.
IMO, a radar detector gives you a false sense of security. If you get hit w/ instant on, good luck. Even the mighty V1 cant save you. Driving 20-30MPH over the speed limit locally makes no sense. Youre not going to get anywhere any faster, you waste gas and risk a ticket. Part of the reason I sold my V1.
BTW your 19MPH over is actually $5/mile over. So your fine is going to be $95 + $62 in fees.

Either way, I drive slower now than I did before I got a detector.

19 MPH over ticket + radar detector ticket.
My particular incident, I was only going 11MPH over, but since I had a radar detector and the cop knew it, he pulled me over. If I did not have a radar detector, I would have gotten no ticket at all.

They never use instant-on and only rarely do they use laser. A V1 makes total sense in this state BECAUSE they leave their radar guns on. Up and down the toll road, I pick them up from two miles away and roll by them safely.
People who drive faster as a result of having a radar detector are stupid. It's not a replacement for your eyes and smarts. It's a supplement to them, that's how I use mine.

For where I live, US 29 is the most direct route, it happens to be a very easy drive. I do however get better gas mileage if I take the I-95, 360, US 58 route, as it's more flat. But I can't stand the traffic/congestion on I-95, so any time I can avoid taking it I do. Plus, US 29 for me is about 40 miles shorter too.

I used to be on the toll road every day. I have mentally noted pretty much all their hiding spots. Now I travel 28 exclusively and have been noting those too.
