Author's note: This is an alcohol free story.
Last evening I met a buddy for dinner. Afterwards, we decided to head home to our respective houses- he in his garrish, white, whale-tailed, Euro-spec 911 and me in my subtle, silver, debadged, chipped, otherwise-stock 1.8TQ. We started getting a bit competitive and began casually dicing with each other. When we got finally got stopped by a red light on an empty six lane road, the stage was set for a real race to begin. He was in the left lane, I was in the right.
As the light turned green, we were off. From 0-30ish it was close, but after that I found myself watching his Euro exhaust belch those infamous blue flames as he shifted. Suddenly he dove from his lane into mine and then hit the brakes. I too, braked hard and as we slowed I looked into the rearview mirror to see one of Indiana's finest, with lights on, in distant pursuit. At that moment, another officer pulled out of a side street just behind us and popped his lights on. Knowing we were their targets, we both pulled over before they had even caught up to us. I was too busy observing his blue flames (guess that shows who won) to see either them, or our speed. I can only estimate that we got up to about 90mph before ending our stupid masculinity test.
Moments later two more cruisers arrived. Four on two. I've been ticketed before for driving too fast but it's never been with such an overwhelming show of police force. I figured they were going to tow our cars and take us to jail.
I decided my best shot was to apologize and plead for the officer's mercy. As the officer approached my car, I rolled down my window. I was about to begin my grovelling when he asked me why I had pulled over. I replied the obvious, which was that I had seen his lights and knew he was coming. He politely explained that he wasn't after me, instead that Porsche parked in front of me. He said he got an "off-the-charts radar reading" and knew it couldn't have been my HONDA ACCORD! He thanked me for being so considerate and sent me on my way!
HONDA ACCORD?!?! A night in jail would have been better!
Rather than jeopardizing the gift I had just been handed, I made a hasty exit as I was afraid my 911 friend would turn traitor and spill his guts. When I got home I called him to see what had transpired after my exit. Fortunately, he didn't lose his composure and turn me in, but he was cited for wreckless driving and speeding. It was only because of his pitiful pleas that they didn't take him to jail or impound his car.
I bought the car for it's understated looks to performance ratio. Last night that purpose served me well. Long live my conservative, debadged A4...errr...Honda Accord!
