Anyone have recommendation for high performance/racing brake pads with a LOW dusting side effect. We all know how much those stock pads produce ALOT of brake dust.

View Full Version : High performance brake pads with low dusting effect. MT atl 10-20-1998, 04:51 AM Anyone have recommendation for high performance/racing brake pads with a LOW dusting side effect. We all know how much those stock pads produce ALOT of brake dust. spieks 10-20-1998, 05:28 AM Lots of options including Raybestos, Rofren, Mintex, etc. I just installed Brembo Gold pads (purchased from LLtek) but don't have enough miles on the pads to give you feedback. Initial impression on braking performance seems to be at least as good as stock pads. I'll update after I get some serious miles on them.
Spieks JayP 10-20-1998, 06:15 AM But I'm going back to the stock pads. I have KVR (probably carbon metallics) and the grab isn't as good.
I'll keep the slotted rotors though. Steve S 10-20-1998, 06:29 AM But you may have something there....sometimes the small decrease in stopping power of the Rofren brake pads bugs me....Hmmmmmm...
Steve S.
97 2.8QM
P.S. I still got them in the garage.
Donnie 10-20-1998, 06:58 AM Hmmm, I haven't noticed a decrease in stopping power ( Brembo drilled fronts, Rofrens, Abt lines ( 6 ), Super Blue fliud.. My god, man, what kind of driving are you doing ??
Donnie John Costin 10-20-1998, 07:33 AM I too am using Rofrens with the stock rotors and I don't really know if it's a lack of stopping power more so than a softer feel. But, when I do need the car to stop quick they do respond. Steve S 10-20-1998, 07:33 AM Well....you know...I got bored....like you haven't done anything to your car! I haven't installed them yet...still trying to find someone (non-dealer) that can do it for cheap...I am too lazy for this kinda stuff....sway bars...I'm ok installing...brake rotors/brake lines....let someone else do it.
Damn dealer quoted me $375 for the whole enchilada.
Are you going with Neil to PIR? Remember, its in your back yard!!!
Steve S.
97 2.8QM
JayP 10-20-1998, 07:41 AM I'm sure the carbon metallics have the same stopping power or more (abs on under heavy braking). The softer feel is unnerving to me.
I liked the grab the stock pads had- dust isn't much of a factor for me. Gary B 10-20-1998, 09:45 AM Just curious, did you have the rotors turned before you installed the new pads? If not, why not?
Gary B
1.8tqms MT atl 10-20-1998, 11:55 AM JonC 10-20-1998, 12:04 PM I've used the FDB2AF (I think) on my '73 911. They have lasted well through several track events and decent number of street miles. I don't know if they have an application for the A4, though. Steve S. 10-20-1998, 12:22 PM I am in the SF Bay Area....see the link below
Steve S.
97 2.8QM

NorCal A4 Owners Club

Dale B 10-20-1998, 03:49 PM I recently changed to the Raybestos pads. (So far, they're great!). I didn't have the rotors turned. One purpose of turning the rotors is to true up the surfaces. Mine showed no sign of warpage (pedal was perfectly smooth, etc.). Another purpose, as I understand it, is to create a fresh surface for breaking in the new pads, possibly to prevent glazing of the pads (or rotors). I've changed brake pads in lots of cars, and have never had a problem with this, so I didn't bother.
If my car had lots of miles on it (maybe 30,000+), I would probably have the rotors turned, at least the fronts. Bob Petruska 10-20-1998, 04:08 PM How does the performance of the new pads compare to the OEM pads?
How about wet weather performance?
And the #1 question ...dust, dust or dust? Dale B 10-20-1998, 08:17 PM Performance of the Raybestos pads is at least as good as the stock pads for street use. (I haven't done any track/autocross, but I'd expect them to be like the stock pads there too). I live in a desert, so I don't have much wet weather experience with them. I did go on a 300 mile trip last weekend and about 60 of those miles were in rain on the highway. I noted no problems but didn't do a lot of braking, either. As far as dust, the buildup is greatly diminished, and seems typical of what most other cars have. (Some, but not much). I only have about 600 miles total experience with these pads to date.
I previously tried the Ferodo pads and wasn't impressed. (I wrote the brake pad FAQ based on changing to these). They may be wonderful on the track when heated up (or maybe not), but I didn't like the pedal feel on the street so I put the stock pads back in after less than 1000 miles with these. (They seemed harder to modulate when coming to a stop). The Ferodos also took a long time be break in to where they felt even decent as far as stopping power. The Raybestos pads were fine right away, like other pads I have used in other cars. I replaced pads on all 4 corners. Given the similar performance to stock pads, I suspect that it would be OK to just change out the fronts to eliminate most of the dust problem. |
