Or rented with beer as payment?
I am going to do my allroad's timing belt over Christmas break and dont' feel like buying this tool that I only need once every 4 years.
It may be possible that the 2.8 would use the same tool.

I recall him mentioning that he's got the cam bar. Hopefully he'll see this.
He's got mail. I took the liberty of calling his attention to the post. Thanks for the tip arob - It's good to see us allroaders looking out for each other.
Good luck with the TB. Post pics if you get a chance. I may need to refer to them when I do mine. :o)

although I wouldn't recommend it!
given his temper on the links. :o)
I ended up doing a custom intake a la "Darintake" since I needed something today.
Is the cam bar 100% necessary or would it be possible to just make tons of indexing marks to get it back together correctly? What's the deal with having to partially remove the cam gears to get the belt on? Is that really necessary?

Ryan, I sent you an email with my numbers, and your set here.
Cam pulleys would be nice, though I did it without them.
It is a fun time, and you really get to know your car!

To get the engine set up & timed for optimal longevity, power, & economy, yea, you'll want it set up perfectly. I usually do the line up procedure 2 or 3 times, even with the bar, just to get it as perfect as possible.
Along with the bar, you'd also need a tool to pop the cam gears off the cams as well.
