Ok back to my pick-up truck. Trying to get it all good by summer so I can tow a boat with it :)

1987 pick-up 22re fi engine. Miles?????

What is new:

Timing chain and gears
oil pump
Timing chain cover
water pump

Its a tap. Sounds like a valve tap. I check all the rocker arm clearances on the valve stems and they are all good.

It was doing it at idle until I realized the timing was pretty far advanced. I pulled it back the idle droped and the tap went away at idle. Well just about. It usually doesn't do it at first and then if I come back from a drive sometimes it would do it at idle.

It comes in at around 1800-2000rpm and taps until about 3000rpm. It DOES NOT do it at WOT. It does it most when I have given it gas/WOT and I let off the gas. I can at that point give it a little gas and it gets louder. But as I said its most noticable as I let off the gas.

It really sounds like a valve tap to me. Its in the head, valve train area from what I can tell. I just got done plugging the vaccume lines and pulling the valve cover. I thought it would be like it was when I had my camaro. I had a 350 with a Solid roller cam.(used to idle like a nascar. whole car would rock with the lope of the cam) I used to have to adjust the valves about every 3 weeks. So I thought, I don't have the oil clips for the rockers, but I'll just pull the cover and get it running a second and see for sure if its a rocker. I figure a little oil would spit from the rockers but what i totally over looked was the timing chain. Its got an overhead cam. Soooo I start her up as I turned the corner to see a little oil spirting from the rockers and then I see a wheel of oil from the timing chain. I ran over to just see if I could hear anything but since I fixed the timing it doesn't do it at idle. I wasn't about to hit the throttle. So I bolted back and shut her down.

I got one good thing out of the mess. The oil pump is working and oil is getting up to the valve train.

I am about to get a valve cover from the junk yard and cut it so just the valves are exposed but not the timing chain.

Here is a video of the noise. Sorry for the loose fan belt thats screaming. You first hear it at 30 in the video then at 20-21 and then from 11-0 I tried to keep it as steady as possible.

Thanks in advanced!

so you can see the movement. Change the sensor to different plugs to view different timing moments.
