BMW to Recall 2.4 Million Cars<p>Germany's BMW AG said on Wednesday it planned to recall 2.4 million of its cars worldwide to replace radiator caps after a passenger was injured by steam escaping from the engine cooling system. However, the company said it was unlikely to succeed in contacting every owner of the 3-, 5-, 7- and 8-Series cars built between 1988 and 1994 that required the new part, but expected to recall around 1.44 million. The replacement costs for 1.44 million cars would be around 22 million marks ($13.6 million), or 15 marks per vehicle, with the actual radiator cap costing only three marks, BMW said. BMW decided to recall the cars when it learned earlier this year that a passenger was burnt when escaped steam from the engine cooling system entered the interior of one of its 7-Series cars, a company spokesman said. The Munich-based carmaker said it estimated around 2.4 million of the 2.9 million cars it made with the potential problem were still in use. Reuters, October 7, 1998
