A friend who is at the hospital now visiting him just called me...and apparently he blacked out, and only remembers driving through the toll booth from NJ to Staten Island. He wasn't drinking and was by himself. Here is the story from the SI Advance.

Luckily he's alive and doing ok, but still losing ones' thumb is still going to be tough to deal with.

Auto accident with injuries
8:25 a.m.: Police are responding to reports of an auto accident with injuries -- someone possibly trapped in a vehicle -- near the intersection of Drumgoole Road East and Arden Avenue in Annadale (map).

No further details available.

He accidentally got his finger caught under his lawn mower and it chopped of 2 fingers. He's been out since the first week of September and probably won't be back for another week or so.
