What is the URL to find out what the VIN numbers stand for?

The FAQ VIN write up references that a WAUGB28D1X is a 1999 A4 quattro with automatic transmission. My dealer says this is NOT correct, VIN # have nothing to do with gearbox - who is correct, or am I misreading the FAQ? I am a bit concerned as I ordered a manual trans. and dealer says this is my VIN

The dealer is correct - transmission is not represented in the VIN. VIN (pos. 4-8) gives body, engine, series identifier & passenger restraint. In the FAQ, 'GB28D' is given as "A4 1.8T Av Q" ('1' is the check digit and 'X' represents 1999) <p>What are you interpreting as automatic transmission? <p>JayF A4Tqms
