I just Bought my first Audi and I am TOTALLY in love with this car.
1997 A4 1.8TQ 5 spd Red/Black sport seating
bilstein/neuspeed
ATP 17"
Momo Interior

80K
Bought for 7.4K$

Master/Slave Cylinder for clutch replaced $450
New P/S hose High pressure(Pump to Rack)DIY $165
Oil Pan gasket leak (slow) *I am going to DIY

I had to fix several problems in my first 2 weeks however and I am getting kind of scared. Do all these audis have this many problems or is it just me? I love the way the car looks, drives, and feels on the road but these problems are making me think that I cant afford the maintinance (last car was a honda). What other problems can I be on a look out for?

to nickel and dime you to death. Most swear by aftermarket warranties, but even those have their inherent risks.

These cars are certainly not Hondas in that it's not merely a question of adding gas, changing oil and driving for 200K miles without a hiccup. Lucky for you that you can do a lot yourself.

What other problems should I look out for? I know that the water pump is sounding funny although the timing belt has been changed. Are there anymore common leaks?

It might have the failure-prone one even though the belt was changed.

I've heard of water pumps letting go as soon as 50k.

Good Luck. I didn't have the cash or patience to live with a 1.8T out of warranty.

with a minimum of problems. I've owned 4 over a 15 year period to prove the point. But, if you run them hard, you'll wear out the most stressed parts sooner. Nothing bad about the car or inherently poor engineering to blame, it's just the price paid for driving your sport sedan like a sports car.
