I'm in the background investigation process of my application to the Denver Police Department. It's pretty nerve racking, but I understand that this phase, in addition to a final interview, are all that's left in the application process. I've done the written and video test, physical test, another written test, polygraph, and psych suitability test. Now they're interviewing everyone listed in my background packet.
Why does this matter to you guys? I never lost that loving feeling for you Audi guys:) And because maybe one of you guys who is law enforcement can chime in with your thoughts and helpful suggestions.
I'm fully aware that it's still a very OUTSIDE chance I get a job offer.

One of my best friends is trying to get into Parker Fire, and I've been hearing how much of a long/arduous process that is. Hang in there! :)

...considering the mortgage lending biz is in the ****ter. I've held fairly high positions which have been more of a hindrance than anything else when applying for jobs outside of the industry. Now I'm thinking about falling back on my USMC roots and applying for the Aurora PD. This job market is seriously kicking my ass. Good luck with everything buddy.

.. you were an MP / shore patrol / embassy guard / etc.
I was USMC Force Recon and have thrown more rounds down range from 1911 .45's and MP5 sub machine guns than any cop ever will, but they didn't care because I had never slapped the 'iron bracelets' on anyone ...
I'm rather glad now that Denver didn't take me ... shat pay and worse hours .. plus all the scum you have to deal with. Pass ;-)

I know a handful of guys with APD (also former recon) and they said that former military are highly sought after. Last I heard they were having a hard time finding people that could pass the initial fitness test. Sounds ridiculous but I can believe it. Spoke with a former USMC grunt last week at the gym and he basically gave me the same spiel. I'm really trying to go back to the Middle East as a contractor but my Secret Clearance is no longer active so I'm more or less SOL.

Federal Guards, etc. But it's really difficult to get through the initial BS of getting accepted...
I can beleive it too (fitness test), have you seen some of the fat bastard cops out there?! I look at some of them and know they couldn't last a week in MC boot camp, much less Ranger School or SERE.

Any suggestions for newbie? I'm a former VP of National Sales and Business Development for two national banks in the area. Both divisions were eventually shut down for the obvious reasons. I was a C-130 flight engineer in the Corps...never got to shoot at anyone in the first place :(
Any advice would be much appreciated man.

that has a base salary (which is hard to do) like Jones Lang LaSalle or the like.
With your financial back ground, it'd be a good fit for you. But it's like a lot of other professions, the first few years tend to be lean while you build your book of business and learn the job, market, other players, etc.
I work with franchise systems so most of my work is national. However, I know of a few good local companies you could try.
Hit me up with an e-mail for more info ...

I also applied for all of the above and still apply to the Air Marshals every year. I have buddies in the program now and they are baffled as to why I never get called back. I've just chocked it up as "not meant to be."
Yup lots of fat cops out there. I wish the city would impose some kind of weight limitation or continued fitness requirements because they can be straight up embarrassing at times.
Anyway, I bet you're loving Generation Kill on HBO. Thought I would be disappointed but they are doing us proud. Especially you recon type.

pay for a rookie was like $47k ... lousy these days, especially for the job of dealing with the cities worst (generally speaking) ... and the typically crap hours.
Not worth it IMHO.

you take in the a** for the first year or so. Top out pay is what needs to be looked at... + off duty and OT.
Street level cop in Denver can do 6 figures annually if he/she likes...
