-wednesday night
-HEY NOW,....
-
-we had a beautiful drive out here to wendover, utah/nevada, adjacent to bonneville salt flats.
-we stopped by miller motorsports park to get some race gas, and to pick up my flip-flops thaht i left there, last month.
-we are here, and settled into a great motel room.
-i unloaded and emptied the R, full race prep, here at the motel.
-we drove out to the salt, and f***in'-A, fully sailed through tech-inspection.
-strolled on over for registration, and a meeting.
-i am totally ready to run, first thing in the morning, 8am.
-no casinos tonight, keep clear, early bed, early up. plenty of time to play after i run.
first run is a 'licensing pass' at around 100mph, so they can see you running, and so you can 'calibrate' your indicated speed v.s. actual speed.
the goal for me is the '130mph club'. it's the only class that anyone can run out here, without complete, extensive race equipment. now, many of us have attained that speed and significantly more, on closed tracks, but this ain't so simple as that, no.
this is a standing mile. that means from standing, to cover one mile, and then the speed trap. you only get five runs. you have to do it twice, with your times averaged for your result. once you make it, your runs are done. in this class, if you go over 140, you are disqualified, thank you for playing, try again next year. well, for this standing mile on the salt, the stock R may, or may not make it. i'm flashed with giac for 93, and after some testing, i'm pretty confident, ....but not to the extent to which i'd count my chickens, while they are still eggs.
the salt is different, it's only got about half the grip of asphalt. once you get much over 100, in a normal car on any surface, your down-force is going away, right when you really need the traction, putting it down, so you can push yourself harder into the exponentially increasing drag of the air, and the ever decreasing traction. i've been 130+ on the salt in my R, and lemme tell yous, it's a wee bit floaty.
well, i've got to go find some food, and a sixer. i'll respond to posts tonight, before i go sleepy-by. tomorrow you'll see pics, maybe video clips, and hear stories. i sorta hope i don't make it quite up to speed tomorrow, so i can run on friday, too.
i do get five runs to achieve it, and if, oddly, for some strange reason, i only get up to 129, tomorrow,....
darn it, i would have to run again on friday to nail it home
p.s.- shout out to my soCal R32 bros, i'll be glad to see yous in a few days at dubfestivus
-and to my buddy rich, back in 'rado, a mustang driver, yeah, i know, but he's really cool. first of all it's a '66 covertible, and, well, cram it real far, not all mustang drivers are the same(re:recent thread)
-thursday
day one-
glorious.
i got a much later start than i had intended. they had about 150 entries for thursday, because of a large group of vintage motorcycles. they're gone now, good riddance. jes' teasin', most of them were cool. a lot of downtime today, because of weather, so a lot of waiting. that was fine though, because even though my r32 brethren and sistren aren't here, ahem, i had my audiworld buddies here. carol, john, neil, bob, and, and,....dammit....
anyhow, after waiting through a huge cue, and crosswind delays, and wondering if i'd even get a run in today, the wind finally let up.
my first run, a 'qualifying' or 'calibration' run, went great. i didn't hold the tc switch in long enough tho, i've surmised because towards the end of my run i saw that it was not, in fact, switched off. now, they changed up on me, with the procedure. you have a one mile run, total. the last 112' is timed. in my class if you go over 140mph, you are disqualified, and you have to try again next year. at the timing mark, i saw my speed indicator moving towards the 138mph mark, so i lifted. my time slip indicated 130.772, so i think i'm in. you need to make two passes, the average is your official time. i had intended to just do the qualification run, and do my two timed runs tomorrow. normally, the qualifying run, they ask for you to keep it to just over 100. they told me that if it felt right, that i could go for it on my qualifying run, and it would count as one of my official runs. so i did. since it looked like i could squeeze a second run in before they shut down for the day, i stayed to do a second run. now the cross has changed to headwind. traction control off. really good launch. went through the timing trap knowing. picked up my timeslip, and i knew before i looked at it- 128.598 - yippee!......whuh?
yes, yes, yes, i am actually quite happy because i'm not done!
i get to do my two official runs tomorrow am.
this really is too fun, not to get more than one day of it, so yippee!
yeah, mixed feelings, aw i didn't make it, but there was the headwind to blame it on, and yeas, i get to do more runs
now- i was at first, guessing that the traction control accidentally being on for the first launch, actually acted as a sort of launch control. the audiworlders said they booed my launch, thought it was boring, they wanted quattro, they wanted to see all four tires throwing it up. i figured that even though my second launch felt like i did good, the esp on launch might be the ticket. neil, audiworld neil, said no, you dork, it was the headwind. your launch was excellent.
either way, i'm going to bed early tonight to race early tomorrow morning. i am allowed three more passes to get two over 130, so i may try the esp on again for the first run, i don't quite know, and i probably won't decide until tomorrow, so.....
let me have it, boys & girls. what do you think? this is your chance to be my virtual pit crew, and get me those two good passes tomorrow. give me your input, and pray, or dance, or whatever you do to persuade the weather to cooperate
neil will be flying out for dubfestivus. audi is flowing him an rs4. rat. just kiddin' neil, if you'll let me drive it
