Dealer said it's the gas cap...what else is new. Any updated check engine light stories from the forum?
It came on for the second time at almost the exact same spot on my way to work. The first time I brought my car to the dealer and they reset the light with the gas cap explanation. Today, it came on at almost the same location on the freeway, bumpere to bumper I might add, as in the first incident. Gas tank is at 1/4. Will refuel tonight. Any other suggestions?

I checked the archives for RH telling us about a turbo problem. Since you didn't post your email I'll ask publically. Can you tell us what happened, in as much detail as you have, thanks.
The check engine light is for emissions. Demand that your dealer show you the VAG output, it'll say there. There are dozens of possible reasons for this to happen, so get the VAG details from them and then we can make some better suggestions.

Mine was a combo of a bad gas cap and a loose hose clamp. It sounds like your dealer is getting the code for evaporative fuel loss, and is ignoring it. This is a new OBD II fault and is mainly aimed at reducing evaporative emmisions. Have the dealer do a a thorough check of the cars fuel system, thats their job and its required by law.
Gary B
1.8tqms
My 98.5 Audi 1.8T quattro felt sluggish. I could rev it up to 6000rpm and the car almost did not gain any speed. Also, the Turbo was not making the familiar whining sound anymore. Took the car to the dealer. I mentioned the wastegate. Thanks Forum. Dealer calls back letting me know it is the wastegate. Dealer replaces complete Turbo including wastegate plus 10K service. Happily drive around until check engine light comes on the next day.
RH

With 28,000 miles on the clock of my '97 A4 1.8Tqms (6,000 miles with a Wett 1.0 bar chip installed) my turbo wastegate rod broke. I can't even remember it happening. Car felt fine first thing in the morning and then later that day it felt sluggish. I also notice a metallic rattle coming from under the car when coasting in gear (windows have to be down). Can also hear the noise with the hood up when you rev the engine.
The car is supprisingly driveable (I've been driving it like this for the past week as the dealer couldn't take the car till today). In normal rush hour traffic on side streets, car seems just slightly sluggish. However, when you really press on the accelerator, the car accelerates much slower than normal. No check engine lights, no rough idle, just not a lot of power. Passing or merging onto highways is a challenge, scary actually. Once you're used to 200 hp under your right foot, a 1.8 litre with basically no turbo boost feels pretty darn slow.

If so, good to know that he did not try to void youre warranty on the wastegate.
