I have a 7'2" funboard, not too wide and not too thick. I can catch small waves and still be able to duck-dive (a little) under the larger ones. I still suck though, only been doing it for 3 months.

Sure it would be a lot easier on a 9' board. You could probably learn to stand up in no time BUT you might soon grow tired of it. My 2 friends who have never surfed before bought a 7'4" funboard and a 7'2" longboard and they are able to stand somewhat after only 3 months.

Also. Longboards are good because you can catch waves in them that you would otherwise not be able to catch on s shortboard. But its all a trade-off.

Personally I am doing fine on my 7'2" funboard and probably in 6 months or so I will move to a 6 and a half foot shortboard.
