This would be in 73 and in Great Falls, Montana of all places. It had 60,000 miles on it at the time and we sold at 120,000. The defrost system was the CRAP. I mean the CRAP. In the winter you would have to have an icescraper in one hand and drive with the other. Scrape the inside enough to see out of and drive, scrape the inside enough to see out and drive.

Mileage? Good? I can't remember at all. I do remember drafting off of the semis though. Get right behind them and let them pull you along. You would barely have to touch the gas.

Mileage was about 26 if I remember correctly.

In order of ownership
'71 Beetle (1st car)
'68 Beetle (used through high-school)
'59 Beetle (post high-school chick magnet)
'54 Beetle (resto-custom project, sold to fund college. :( )

Depending on the engine, mileage was from the upper 20s to less than 20. My best mileage was attained with a mild 1641cc with twin 34 Solex carbs using 87 octane. Worst mileage was with a 2180cc, twin 48IDA carbs and stinger exhaust. The car was fast and the sound addicting. Best of all, gas was cheap.

To be honest, for a straight commuter car (safety aside), an old aircooled is pretty decent if you keep the engine fairly stock with a few well chosen upgrades to improve efficiency. A 5spd conversion really helps on the freeway.

Funny part is that I read a bus in a wind tunnel is actually has less drag than a bug... 3rd hand unsubstantiated science. My Type II and Type III's as a kid all did about the same mileage. However, if you accounted in the leaking oil, I probably had an oil use on par with a 10mpg car.

...pretty much always had the accelerator on the floor unless at cruising speed. I got tired of 62 mph max on the freeway, being scared of losing my legs in minor collisions, etc. Our relationship ended on a 100+ degree day due to warped cylinder walls. I remember driving really slow to avoid overheating too. Oh well. I was glad to move on.

I'm getting 25ish with a 1776cc motor. I'm somewhat new to aircooleds having purchased this bus a year ago. Currently working on rust repair and slamming it. Should be rolling by mid-July!

most manufacturers are increasing the size of their logos?

But man, those were big on the micros.

Had an acquaintance do that a few years back....
