Uhm the gun backfired and smacked me in the face. HARD. Thought I had a broken nose or cheekbone. Fortunately not, but will have a wonderful shiner for a few days. Makes for good conversations at Christmas dinner... my parents & other friends coming over for dinner in a few hours for Xmas Eve don't know yet.
Nice huh.
It was a "30 Aught 8" gun, does that sound right? It's a hunting rifle, my bro-in-law and his bro went to the range yesterday for some practice and "sighting in" for their elk/ deer hunting trip on the 26th, and I jumped at the chance to join them and shoot a gun for the first time.
Damned thing slipped right off my shoulder (was wearing ski jacket, too slippery...) and WHAM ! right in the face, with the backwards force of the bullet launching out at xxx mph.
BUT I got the target! Shell casing & watch for perspective :-).
Props to you for shooting such a hard kicking round. First time I did, i thought my eyeballs were rattling in my head.

They're heading about 200 miles up the northwest corner of CO at oh-dark-early on the 26th to get a couple of elk or deer. Yeah, a couple! Each guy (2 going) got an elk tag, so they don't want to come home empty handed. Now the trick is to get all the dead animals ontop of a Suburban and haul the beasts back home. (EWWWWWW). I'll eat the steaks but I don't want to see the process beforehand really.

Someone should have watched your stance and firing position a little better to avoid something like that. Hope your vision is okay (no detached retinas or anything) I know a few older shooters who had to stop because of vision problems.
Next time make sure your right elbow is shoulder height. Your upper arm should be nearly horizontal and out away from the body. That'll keep the stock in tight against your shoulder and it can't slip out.

Once you have the technique down pat (allowing for wind and shooting uphill or downhill), then move up to the bigger stuff :)
A 308 is the largest caliber we used at home for bringing down bear, deer, elk, and moose.
Congrats! :-D

some thief was trying to steal my purse. And he got a lucky punch in, but I fought him off and was able to steal his wallet instead. Then, after I took the cash (which was only $2), I turned his wallet into the local police dept., explained to them what happened and they arrested him using the address on his i.d.
Now, that would've been cool! But back to real life, I hope your eye gets better.
