We haven't done this in awhile....My choice for things I would like to see in future iterations of the A4 are:
1) Electric Passenger Seat (the manual one is kinda hard to reach from the drivers side) - standard on 2.8
2) optional 17" tire and wheel package
3) Three engine choices: 180 bhp 1.8T, 193 bhp 2.8, 230 bhp 2.7 bi-turbo
(remember these are for the A4...not the S4 version...that one would get
the 265 bhp 2.7 bi-turbo or the 340 bhp 4.2 V8)
4) optional xenon lights
5) optional leather sports seats (do they have this now?...I forget) on both the
1.8T and 2.8
6) optional - in-dash single disc CD player
I know I have more I would like to see...I just can't remember them right now.
Steve S.
97 2.8QM
P.S. Youre right...in the best of worlds...those headlights should be alittle bit more powerful...the climate control has 2-3 buttons to turn it totally off...and that alarm needs to be replaced with some nice Hella horns.
Steve S.
97 2.8QM
P.S. Had my car for 5 weeks and here's what I wish it had:
-a longer seat cushion on standard seats
-a good old-fashionedpull knob for lights (that turns on the interior lights that when you twist it)
-lit switches for sunroof/maplights
-better radio reception (10 miles from New York I get static on NY stations)
I've got 3,000 miles on it already, so I guess I like most of it!

I really like the idea of more engine choices but I don't think the US is a big enough market. What did they say yesterday....Europe gets 10 engine choices!
In dash CD player...come on...it is the 90's. Acutally I shouldn't complain because I have one of the worlds largest cassette collections.
17" Wheel package a biggie.
A/C override at ALL temps.
One button Climate Control Off.
VCR with TV in back....just kidding :-)

- Better controls on the Delta radio. The station presets are the same as all the others so it's hard to use without taking eyes off the road. Steering wheel controls would be a nice addition...have them on our 9-3.
- Germans scoff, but better cup holders.
- Headlight washers with separate switch
- One touch up on rear windows.
- Better cruise control switches. I like the Toyota "stalk"...very easy to use.
- Headlight switch on the dash like the A6
- Recirc that works without the A/C compressor.
- Clutch that grabs a bit lower.
- NO MORE BRAKE DUST!
- Washer fluid with a minty fresh scent! ;-)
That's all I can think of.
Dave
'97 1.8TQMS "wett" (Eibach/Koni's & Raybestos installed today!)

How about giving those Hella Supertones a shot? I am assuming that the factory alarm hooks to the Main Horn and does not have a separate one.
I will eval mine on Saturday when I pick it up and I might give those babies a try. The thing is really anemic....really...no, really. There was a discussion several months ago about this...and the alarm horn was in some strange place...not easily changed. I want to try those Hella Supertones just for my regular horn...gotta be different. About $69 for the pair, correct?
Ah...the wait is almost over....you can taste it right....that kinda oiley gasoline taste...that burning rubber taste...that smoking clutch taste......that nasty brake dust taste. Yeah, those Supertones are $67.95 at Performance but I think Imparts or one of the other banner advertisers here had the Hella Air Horns which Performance sells for $42.50 for around $29.00 so I might price the Supertones with them.
Too bad about the factory alarm horn. Maybe Dale Black can figure out the location with his service manuals and see if there is an easy reach to them. The Alarm horn may be substitutable (word?).
Anyway, I haven't been able to sleep for a week (at least without waking up three or four times). I just CANNOT wait for Saturday, and neither can my staff....
Kirk

You'll have to give up a few inches of front seat leg room to squeeze a V8 in the A4's engine bay....
Anyway, I'd like to take a couple inches from the trunk and give them to the back seat passengers. That would remove any need to agonize over the shortage of interior space compared to the less affordable A6.

In addition to what you mentioned:
1. More leg room front and rear
2. underhood light (like my 90Q) for late night oil checks.
3. larger right side mirror (or did they already do this?)
4. automatic wheel washers :-)
5. Better horn.

... I would wish for my A4 these things:
- Xenon lights
- more leg room in the back
- in-dash MINIDISC player (CD changer is good enough, but who uses tapes these days, eh?)
- illuminated (map)light / sunroof switches
- real cup holders
- one-touch trip computer reset, not this silly 3x reset thing
- orange rear turn signals (I imported Euro tail units to remedy this)
- power passenger seat
- heated mirrors that behave themselves
- circuitry that slaps the driver hard when s/he turns on the tail fog light. Esp. Volvo and Mercedes drivers would need such a circuitry...
As for the headlight washers, I fixed that with an additional switch, but truly annoying. Some of the other things that were mentioned (one-touch up) are there on euro models, but I guess they don't want to be sued here in the US...
- Stan

I like to see the weight of the car go down while maintaining the solid German feel. Maybe different metals for the engine. I believe either the A8 or A6 has exotic metals to reduce weight. I would like more engine output with better gas mileage but that's easier said then done. I hope they don't just slap on extras with no regard to weight.
Mark (98.5 2.8 QMS)

What's wrong with us? Hey, if you want 17 inch wheels, there's quite a few unique packages you can choose from in the aftermarket. What's really cool is that you can install these yourself.
Installing a 6 speed tranny yourself might take a bit more skill. One extra ration in a well chosen, well spaced gearbox, could do wonders for this car. Since Audi is already shipping 6 speeds, this shouldn't be too much of a stretch for them.
Unlike cupholders...
Andy

In addition to everyone else's responses:
- centrally located clock
I think the clock should be more centrally located. My passengers seem to want to know what time it is without asking me. Oh, and I like analog. DO NOT make this a digital clock in the radio or anywhere else. Keep it analog!
- truly adjustable clock
How about a clock that can be adjusted forward AND backward? Mine runs fast and when it gets to about 10 minutes ahead of the real time, I get to adjust it ahead 11 hours and 50 minutes to fix it.
- smart intermittent wipers
I'd like the wipers to stop (or slow down) when I'm stopped at a light. Then resume operation when I start moving again.
- better brakes
Our Achilles Heel of autocrossing (IMHO) in the stock class.
- keylock on the armrest
Went to a concert last night, locked up the car and left it with the "valets" (and I use the term loosely). Realized later my sunglasses ($275) were in the armrest.
(Side note: Valet had left my window down a few inches and locked the car. When I returned, he reached in through the window to press the unlock button. He opened the door and the alarm went off. He managed to set off the motion sensors I think. I jogged over to the car and put my key in the door to turn off the alarm before he really screwed something up.)
- single CD in-dash, in addition to changer in the trunk.
- random play of all six cd's, not just one
- foglights that work without the headlights
I think these are all really nitpicky things. I love the car the way it is.
Drew S.
Several items that haven't been mentioned, and I like most of the ones so far....
1. Memory drivers seat. I hate it when I get my car back from service and I have to re-adjust my seat. (Hey only twice and my 15K is coming up so I guess I can't complain *too* much)
2. Defrost that works with 4 wet people in the car. Oh and re-circ without A/C on.
3. I'm kinda late to this thread, so I apologize for the redundancy.
1) Better controls for the climate control system. Personally, I think a rotary knob makes more sense for temp control. And I wish manual mode was truly manual. And when I go to the trouble of turning the system off, I wish it would stay off when I restart the car. I could go on, but you get the point.
2) More places to small items (like my pager and badge) where they won't fly all over the place. It's a pain having to open the armrest all the time.
3) I agree that the clock controls aren't well thought out. Should be able to adjust backwards.
4) Better radio controls - no explanation needed.
5) Memory for seat and mirror settings.
6) Armrest on door is too low (lower than center armrest) and too far away.
7) More telescoping on steering wheel. I have long legs and short arms.
8) Play radio when rewinding or fast forwarding cassettes.
I'm sure I'll think of more.
Kyle
'97 2.8

I *hate* the standard A4 seats. No tilt, bolsters just too low, miss leather.
Why you can't get them as an option on the 1.8T is Audi USA marketing at it's worst.
My next nit is the key position is too low & thus dangle on your leg while you drive.
My final thang would be why did they limit the 1.8T to 150bhp (yep, marketing again)?
Other than that, totally happy. Assuming that the factory alarm horn is the same one that chirps when the system is armed, then it appears to be accessible from inside the trunk, probably behind the driver's side, side panel of the trunk. (The same place you find the CD changer connector and phone wiring). This is just my guess from listening to the system.
I checked the manuals and couldn't find a good location diagram for the alarm system. There are some good location diagrams for the vacuum operated power locks, and seemingly every other system on the car, but not the alarm system. The electrical schematic shows a single alarm horn (called "H8" in Audi-code). The power wire should be black and yellow, and the ground wire should be brown, both 14 AWG size
One more day, one more day! Good luck and have fun with your new A4!

1) flexible telephony architecture which utilizes existing mic and speakers for easy hands free adaptation for most major models of cell phones ... seems like a no brainer to me. Charge as $200 option (probably cost audi $30-$40 bucks max, bang, Audi makes an incremental mint.
2) An easier to read oil dipstick ( the one provided leaves too much room for error and is a a pain in the @#$% to read)
3) Obviously, 17 inch wheel option with elegant audi oem wheels. (no cheese)
So far so good with my pearl Avant QMS
Oh yeah, can dealers have the three-step process touch up paint. It just seems fair.
I'd say that (for those of us with only one Audi dealer in our area) I'd like a dealer that can fix my car right the first time, not requiring at least three trips. Not to mention a dealer that doesn't scratch the car, take care of it as well or better than I do. I should be able to drop the car for service with confidence that the work is performed correctly and my property is cared for and respected. These dealers experience little or no pain from AoA as far as I can tell. It is just us, the customers, experiencing the pain. I love the car, but based on my service experiences... I'll buy MB or BMW next time.
